Strictly Come Dancing

We are currently offering places on a two year Level 3 advanced apprenticeship in Textiles & Apparel.  This Advanced Diploma will see suitable students gaining practical hands on experience four-days a week with Strictly Come Dancing and the BBC, whilst one day will be spent at Fashion Capital gaining invaluable training.

Whilst some experience is preferable it is not essential. If you are already proficient at sewing, there is also a full time job available on top of an apprenticeship. Please see below for complete job description

Job title: Apprentice Costume Machinist

An opportunity has arisen for an Apprentice Sample / Costume Machinist to join DSI Clothing, the organisation who produces the competition dresses for the BBC television show Strictly Come Dancing. Whilst training and learning the skills of a costume machinist you will also assist with dress decoration and trimmings, take part in fit sessions, learn about taking accurate measurements and develop knowledge of different fabric types.

 


 

 

Main Duties & Responsibilities:-

 

 Learning and developing skills in constructing and producing various simple first samples.
 
Understanding and use of all industrial machines such as over locker, cover stitch, lock stitch, felling and button hole / attach

 

Assist with the making and altering of costumes

 

Sewing both simple and complicated toiles to develop own abilities for future progression.

 

Assisting in cutting out samples/toiles.

 

Learning and developing knowledge of different fabric types and how to handle and identify right side of fabric.

 

Understanding internal components and when it is necessary to use them.

 

Preparation of cut sample for machining.

 

Learning the use of industrial machinery and how to work them correctly to achieve commercial wearable garments.

 

Learning the correct process of pressing a garment through construction stages to final press.

 

Assisting with the fitting and appearance of costumes

 

Learn about taking and recording accurate measurements

 

Help alter and refurbish costumes and accessories
 
 

 

The ideal candidate will have:

 

Good and accurate hand and machine sewing skills, basic knowledge of different sewing machines and their maintenance and familiarity with sewing terminology and techniques.

 

The ability to work on own initiative and under supervision.

 

A helpful, positive and flexible approach.

 

Good time management and the ability to manage their own workload.

 

Self motivation to acquire new skills and knowledge.
