Grinko & Ghanem Land in Latvia

14-11-2008

With fashion’s Grande Dame Diane Pernet in attendance the duo combined their contrasting styles to reveal a riot of colour, texture and ideas. Showing at this season’s [Moment] Grinko & Ghanem presented an eclectic mix of handicrafts, history, culture and couture. [Moment] is currently taking over the Riga fashion scene with its alternative approach to fashion, performance, art and music. This season cult couturier Ziad Ghanem and milliner du jour Justin Smith were invited [Moment] guests from the UK.

Entitled ‘The Divine Comedy,’ the Grinko/Ghanem unison was a deliberate clash of style, form and colour from beginning to end. Grinko’s statement jewellery pieces combine the historical feel of Marie Antoinette with the dark morbidity of Fellini while Ghanem plays on volume, relaxed silhouettes and texture galore.

Ziad said: “The Grinko/Ghanem collaboration is a fusion of references from many cultures; Arabic, African, English, Chinese and Russian. It reflects the great diversity of life. I liked the idea of using the very sophisticated and elaborate Grinko jewels with my casual clothes. It added an element of luxury without being pretentious which created a show that was fun."

Grinko added: "Ziad's approach to fashion is very modern and unique. I wanted my accessories to be shown with his clothes to break the obvious style that my pieces are usually shown with. There are no rules when we collaborate together, who says you can only wear diamonds and pearls to the opera? I wanted to show that my pieces can be worn in a modern and fresh way. Styled with Dr Marten’s the boots gave the show a more London feel while the candy colours softened the aggressive edge.”

The concluding message from the Grinko/Ghanem collaboration: clash is the new black!
