Is There Such Thing as an Investment Piece?

24-07-2014

It’s a mentally comforting conversation after one has just bought a very expensive piece such as a Chanel bag to actually
justify its purchase in terms of an investment.

The term ‘investment piece’ in fashion doesn’t entirely mean what one would expect. Its not like buying real estate which is considered an actual investment. It is very unlikely you are going to make any money from purchasing expensive designer goods, but for the term ‘investment piece’ people do consider certain goods still to be that type of piece even if it doesn’t make money, or even loses a percentage of value. Investing in well- established, high end brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Hermes often provide the best degree of investment. Typically it is pieces that are most iconic to the brand that have the most resale value such as the Balenciaga leather moto jackets, the Chanel Boy bag or the flap bag, the Celine Trapeze bag, and the Louis Vuitton Needful bag.

For buyers considering their goods as investment pieces, some will be pleased to know they can actually sell their goods and make profit above retail value. Classics that are waitlisted or limited edition are your best bets. Currently, items like the Chanel Lego bag and the Dior Tribal earrings are examples of these pieces selling above retail value.

Its not just about your product being an investment piece. Selling techniques are vital in maximising what you get for your piece. The trick is not to wait. Experts reveal that you should sell your piece as soon as you’re done with it. Even better is to depart with your piece within season to recoup more money than you gave for it.

The alternative is to sit on something until it becomes vintage, which takes at least 10 years. A main reason for this is that in that period pieces have more stories to them and the older they get the harder they become to find. Keeping the original packaging and the entire components that came with the original purchase will really enhance the chances of your products making money when you come sell it as consumers feel as if they are buying are new product. Essentials of product maintenance with specific products and technique of dealing will all contribute together in maximizing money for your piece.
