Appear Here Founder Ross Bailey recently commented that ‘Retail is not dying, it’s changing,’ – and here at FashionCapital we couldn’t agree more. At the end of last year we soft launched the FC Designer Collective which not only sells locally made products and fashion by emerging designers but incorporates making facilities along with learning, support and community based projects. FC Designer Collective aims to be more than just a shop, it’s a creative hub to provide opportunities.
On the 7th January 2020, FC Designer Collective Development Manager Stephanie Knapp met with members of Islington Council, the Job Centre Plus team and other community group leaders to provide some information on the retail project with Islington Council. Stephanie spoke about the opportunities that are already available, for example, selling products, providing business advice for those who are sewing/tailoring as a hobby but wish to take this to the next level and to give information on getting qualifications. The group also discussed the potential for future employment opportunities that could arise as a result of this project.
This was followed by a second meeting with Cllr Sheikh at the retail space on Fonthill Road along with other key members of the community and Islington Council. Stephanie provided an update on the progress of the space; the designers already working with the initiative with their garments on display, ready for sale in the shop and the meetings planned for the coming days. Stephanie explained that Fashion-Enter has been on hand to answer queries and give advice where necessary. The meeting also included a discussion about the project going forward and the opportunities that we hope to provide the local area and the creative community.
