The McQueen Documentary


It still to this day seems arduous to digest that the fashion world lost one of the most legendary and iconic designers of our time, an event that happened eight years ago that somehow nevertheless feels somewhat surreal. When news descended of Alexander McQueen’s sudden and oh so tragic passing, the entire industry and supporters of his work were completely perplexed and found the news difficult to even comprehend and realised that fashion would somehow never quite attain the same pure magic and unparalleled artistry as before.

A fascinating new documentary which delves into the extraordinary life and career of Alexander McQueen will be unveiled to supporters the world over from June 8th, showing at the Picturehouse Central in London. Supporters will feed their curiosities in the film, directed by Ian Bonhôte and written by Peter Ettedgui, which depicts an authentic image of the legend himself – Lee, through a series of never seen before interviews that converse with his closest family, friends, and collaborators. The much anticipated documentary will additionally include footage of his fashion shows that transpired as revolutionary spectacles with the inclusion of arresting aesthetics and archive audio.

The film that runs for 111-minutes documents the extensiveness of McQueen’s plentiful career, addressing his humble fashion beginnings after graduating in 1992 from Central Saint Martins and his 1997 Givenchy appointment to working milestones including Shalom Harlow’s strapless white dress catwalk appearance at his Spring/Summer 1999 show, before rotating on a revolving circle sprayed by two robotic gun that dispersed her body with paint. The designer’s final years as a working creative is also explored before Lee’s suicide in 2010.

The trailer for the upcoming documentary, which premiered last month at the Tribeca Film Festival featured a poignant statement in a voiceover who aptly vocalised: “No one discovered Alexander McQueen, McQueen discovered himself.” A must-see!
