Partnering With Open Style Lab
There are moments that remind us exactly why inclusive design matters, and welcoming Open Style Lab to the Fashion Technology Academy has been one of them. Our industrial training facility in Haringey has been filled with creativity, collaboration and determination as learners from diverse backgrounds come together each Saturday to create adaptive fashion that changes lives. By providing accessible workspaces, adapted industrial machinery and an inclusive learning environment, we’ve seen first-hand how removing barriers allows talent, confidence and innovation to flourish.
Now in its third week, the programme is already demonstrating that great design begins with opportunity. Every garment being developed reflects not only technical excellence but also dignity, independence and individuality for those who will wear it. The energy across the studio has been infectious, proving that when accessibility is embedded into education and manufacturing, it doesn’t simply open doors, it inspires better ideas, stronger collaboration and a more inclusive future for fashion.

Celebrating Vocational Learning This Exam Results Season
As Vocational Celebration Day (6th August) shines a spotlight on the value of technical education, it’s the perfect time to recognise that the future of the UK fashion industry depends on skilled young people choosing vocational pathways. With employers facing growing skills shortages in garment technology, pattern cutting, production and manufacturing, there has never been a greater need to inspire the next generation to develop practical, industry-ready expertise.
At the FTA, we’re proud to offer our UAL Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Creative Practice for 16 to 18-year-olds, giving learners the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with industrial machinery, pattern cutting, garment construction and product development in a real manufacturing environment. Designed in partnership with industry, the course equips students with the technical skills, confidence and experience needed to progress into apprenticeships, employment or further study. With results season underway, vocational education continues to prove that it is not an alternative route, but a first-choice pathway to exciting and rewarding careers in fashion.

FEL CEO and ATMF Chair Jenny Holloway recently featured in Drapers, urging the fashion industry to recognise the significant progress Leicester’s garment manufacturing sector has made over the past six years. Responding to reports surrounding historic legal claims, Jenny emphasised that today’s industry is defined by transparency, ethical production and investment in skills – not the issues of the past.
Highlighting initiatives including the In Factories We Trust platform and the expanding Leicester Made & Regions programme, Jenny called on brands and retailers to take a fresh look at UK manufacturing. “It’s time to take a new look at Leicester and stop the old rhetoric,” she said, reinforcing the ATMF’s commitment to rebuilding confidence in a resilient, responsible and competitive British fashion supply chain.

Looking to strengthen your technical fashion skills? The FTA has a range of practical courses coming up, from an Introduction to Industrial Sewing & Garment Making Workshop and a 2-Day Beginners Pattern Cutting Workshop to specialist Tailoring Courses led by master tailor Francesco Vuoto. Whether you’re taking your first steps into fashion, preparing for further study or looking to expand your professional expertise, our industry-led training provides hands-on experience using the same techniques and equipment found in professional manufacturing. Places are limited, so book early to secure your spot.

Whether you’re developing a collection, perfecting samples or working on client projects, FC Designer Workspace offers flexible access to industrial sewing machines, large cutting tables and Alvanon forms without the overheads of your own studio. Available to hire by the hour, day or week, the workspace is ideal for students, freelancers, start-up brands and independent designers looking to work in a professional manufacturing environment. Islington Sustainability Fair – 24th August
FEL will be joining the Islington Sustainability Fair on Monday 24th August, 2.00pm – 5.00pm at Islington Assembly Hall. Come along and find out about the sustainable businesses and services in the borough. Visit the FEL stand and learn practical sewing skills and how to repair and upcycle garments using leftover textiles. With clothing and electrical repairs, a community clothes swap, bike servicing, crafts, food, music and plenty of family-friendly activities, it’s lining up to be a fantastic afternoon celebrating sustainability and reducing waste.
