From Catwalk to Classroom: Designer and Educator John Herrera 

How many fashion and design tutors can say they are also internationally recognised couture designers? At the Fashion Technology Academy (FTA), we can!

Visiting tutor John Herrera is not only a celebrated designer with a global following, but also a gifted educator whose sessions consistently receive outstanding feedback from students. His ability to translate high-end couture techniques into practical, accessible learning is rare and invaluable.

On Sunday 15th February, FEL/FTA CEO Jenny Holloway and Head of Education, Lan Leeder, were out in force to support John at the spectacular London Terno Ball – a vibrant celebration of Filipino culture, community and creativity. The evening brought together more than 300 guests from across the globe, united by kapwa, the shared spirit at the heart of the Filipino soul, and the warmth of bayanihan, a powerful sense of collective support and hospitality.

It was an inspiring event, rich with pride and purpose. Community champions and empowered women took to the catwalk in celebratory fashion presentations, confidently embracing the spotlight. The atmosphere was one of unity and joy, a true coming together.

At the heart of the evening were John’s designs, including pieces from his globe-trotting Augilia Collection, featuring the iconic Terno butterfly sleeve. Characteristically upright, structured and dramatically rounded, the sleeve’s sculptural silhouette, was once achieved through traditional materials such as piña fibre and heavy starching, is now engineered through precise contemporary construction techniques. The result is a striking balance of heritage and innovation.

For FTA students, being taught by a designer of this calibre is extraordinary. They are not simply learning pattern cutting or garment construction; they are gaining insight into couture thinking, cultural storytelling and the discipline required to operate at the highest level of international design.

John Herrera is proof that technical excellence and creative vision can sit side by side – on the catwalk and in the classroom. And for the Fashion Technology Academy, having such a skilled designer guiding the next generation of talent is something we are immensely proud of.
