12 April 2012 – New Stock & Happy Customers

After a hectic week of shows, talks and events British Designers Bath and a selection of other independent retailers followed up with a Sample & Clearance Sale over the long Easter Weekend. A special shout-out goes to Jackie here from Traffic People for organising the event. As many retailers know Easter Weekend can be tricky to predict but the turnout was consistent and especially good on the Saturday. Looking forward to the next one.

It is always fabulous to hear back from happy customers that have worn one of our designers’ pieces to a special event or occasion. Recently we heard from Vickie, she bought a Stefanie England (Bath Spa graduate 2010) fine pleat dress with flared skirt to wear to a masked ball and sent us this shot from the event after. Thank you Vickie, great to hear about a positive result.

New in this week we have a new designer Dee Izmail with a collection of silk satin occasion dresses, a beautiful fluid design in either black or bird print by Rachel Antonio and some new stock from Jean-Pierre Braganza, Ruby Rocks and Goat. Plus local Bath resident Carole Wadham has brought in 6 very unique hats. Come in and see the latest before it goes!

29 March 2012 – Bath Does Fashion Week

 

It’s been a very stylish time indeed here in Bath with an all out week long agenda featuring shows, seminars, talks, workshops, screenings and events.

For us at the boutique it began with ‘Bath Life’s Fashion Night Out’ and an in-store Nail Bar courtesy of Nails Inc, thanks girls for the great shape and polish (mine still look as though they have just been done) along with a glass of fizz, a raffle and a selection of discounted designs.

The following day was an early start (not good after a night of fizz!) dropping off outfits for the Designer Show at the Assembly Rooms. By mid-morning models had run through the outfits and we were required to provide an alternative outfit for look 6 which was a tad too short and a bit, well, rude. Luckily we had something long and flowing by the same designer (so as not to confuse the credit notes) and the piece actually worked better than the original option. Bonus!

The show went really well and the British Designers section looked stunning with the likes of Hemyca, Danny Tang, Tramp in Disguise, Zoe Boomer and Nina Bon Bina working the catwalk topped off with Fifi Venus headpieces.

Saturday and our very own Director Jenny Holloway came into town as a guest on the ‘Fashion Your Future’ careers panel. Others on the panel included: Journalist Sarah Mower, Stylist Rebekah Roy, Designer Joe Richards plus others. It was insightful to hear how panel members got to where they are today and the journey was not always a straight path!

Bath in Fashion 2012 may have come to an end but there’s still time to bag a stylish bargain with the Independent Sample Sale starting this Thursday. British Designers will be joining in with a selection of goodies alongside Traffic People, Image, Sassy & Boo, Stella & Dot and more.

So if you are in Bath from Thursday 5^th April onwards do come and find the ‘Sample Sale’ next to the café courtyard in Milsom Place, well, it would be rude not to. Local mag ‘Folio’ Bath & Bristol have featured the sale on page 23 this month;)

 

22 March 2012 – Some Dates for Your Stylish Diary

 

Bath in Fashion is just around the corner (starting the 25^th) and we have been busy preparing outfits for our British Designers@FashionCapital section in the designer show. Here are the details:

One of Bath in Fashion’s catwalk highlights is a headline fashion show at glittering The Assembly Rooms. The show, staged by international show producer John Walford, hot from London Fashion Week, will include glamorous hot-off-the-catwalk designs and styled by London fashion consultant, Rebekah Roy (whose clients include top models Kate Moss, Erin O’Connor and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley).

Bathin Fashion 2012; Sunday 25th March – Sunday 1st April

Bath in Fashion 2012 celebrates style from top to toe with an action-packed line-up that includes two of British fashion’s most famous names, shoe designer Manolo Blahnik and milliner, Stephen Jones. Stunning catwalk shows, include guest designer Amanda Wakeley. Don’t miss workshops by textile artist Karen Nicol and Julian Roberts; Vintage Sunday, featuring Pearl Lowe; talks by design and fashion legends Matteo Alessi and Roger Saul and Rosemary Harden, Manager of the Fashion Museum; and films like Beyond Biba introduced by Barbara Hulanicki, the style icon behind the Biba label.

 

 

Nails Inc Shape & Polish Offer at the Boutique

 

In store we will have Nails Inc on Thursday 29^th providing a boutique nail bar from 5.30pm until 8.30pm so drop in for a shape and polish for just £5 pounds.

Bath’s Big Swish

Tomorrow evening (Thursday 22^nd March) we will be joining in with a table of British Designer goodies at Bath’s Big Swish in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. As well as the swish itself, the evening will include a wine reception and nibbles, with live music throughout the evening. There also is a raffle which includes amazing prizes from Jamie’s Italian, Yo Sushi!, Jack’s Brasserie in Bristol and Neal’s Yard.

7 March 2012 – Competition & our own Front Cover!

Great news! The Hemyca suit shot created for the ‘Bath in Fashion’ 2012 brochure has been selected as the March cover for ‘The Bath Magazine.’ The image looks fantastic and Hemyca are on a roll after their much applauded Autumn/Winter collection and a successful meeting with a Ms Anna Wintour during LFW!

This Saturday we have collaborated with Bath Uni’s ‘Fashion Society’ and the ‘African and Caribbean Society’ to create a catwalk show and evening entitled ‘Heritage’. The models came in for their fitting last Sunday and the collection of strong prints, deep pinks and purples looked stunning. Good luck with the show and no doubt we’ll be posting up images next week.

‘FLY THE FLAG’

Design a Great British Tee

With all eyes on Britain and the Olympics this summer there is no better time to create a one-off British inspired Tee.

The Concept:

 

To design an image or graphic based on the Union Jack and fashion design /illustration.

 

The Rules:

Your design can be presented as a hand sketch in ink or as a computer aided design, please use no more than 3 colours. Keep in mind that the design has to look good over the lumps and bumps of a human body and can appeal to men, women or both.

The competition is open to anyone based in Bath and surrounding area within a 15 mile radius that is not already working full-time in graphics or fashion.

Please submit your design on an A4 sheet of paper with your name and contact details.

The Deadline:

 

Thursday 22^nd March 2012

Judging:

 

The judging panel will consist of key members from the FashionCapital team including: retail, workshop, factory and head office.

The Winner:

March 2012. The winning design will be printed on to T-shirts and sold at British Designers @ FashionCapital Boutique in Milsom Place, Bath and FCB Online Boutique. The winner will receive a percentage of sales from the design.

Start small; think big, this competition offers insight into the production process, marketing, sales and retail.

24 February 2012 Lobondi & London Fashion Week

Just in and new to the boutique a selection of dresses from Tina Lobondi – a London based womenswear designer specializing in luxury day and eveningwear. Featuring African prints with contemporary silhouettes Tina’s designs are right in line with the emerging Tribal & African trend as seen on the Spring/Summer 2012 catwalks from the likes of Etro and Bottega Veneta.

I have just returned from an inspirational trip to London Fashion Week. The general consensus was that LFW had really upped its game this season and the collections on show looked polished and sophisticated, not forgetting to add, very colourful for A/W. Also at the exhibition, and selling outside from an ice-cream van, were a range of TopShop NEW GEN limited edition designer tees. Personal favs: Holly Fulton and Gareth Pugh. In line with this concept we are also running a t-shirt design competition open to the residents of Bath and surrounding area. Check out the details below, you never know you could see your t-shirt graphic on sale and being worn!

 

16 February 2012 – Fashion & Fizz

Last weekend British Designers Bath teamed up with retail neighbour ‘Traffic People’ for a weekend of Valentine’s antics including live models, fizz and cupcakes. Thanks to all that got involved especially Jackie for organising the event. We look forward to more collaborative events soon.

 

 

Just in…we have a fresh delivery of beautiful Heidi Mottram eel skin i-Pad cases, purses and keyrings – great quality gifts. We also have a new designer on board; Freddie Zerafa. Based in the South West Freddie has over 20 years experience in couture fashion design and has just recently started his own label. In the past his designs have been worn by the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker and his ethos is to create one-off designs that flatter the female form. Check out his unique day and eveningwear in the boutique now.

This event is a must for anyone who has ever wanted to work in fashion. If you have ever wondered what a retail manager, designer or stylist actually does, now’s your chance to find out from the professionals.

Sarah Mower, a critic for American Vogue who was awarded the MBE last October for Services to the fashion Industry, will launch the event. Bath born and raised, Sarah writes columns for British newspapers, is a Visiting Professor at Central Saint Martins College of Art, and the first British Fashion Council’s Ambassador for Emerging Talent.

Our panel of experts includes:

·         Jo Harrington, store manager of Banana Republic, who will talk about life at the coal face.

·         FashionCapital Director Jennifer Holloway, who began her career as a buyer and went on to produce her own label.

·         John Walford, who brings years’ of show production experience from London Fashion Week, and has worked with a long list of top designers, including Vivienne Westwood.

·         Louise Pickles, Head of Fashion at Bath Spa University, will act as chair and referee.

After the serious business, Spirit Contemporary Photography will be working their magic with mini makeovers.

17 January 2012 ‘The Reality of the Fashion Business Today’ at Bath Spa University

The FashionCapital Industry Seminar ‘The Reality of the Fashion Business Today’ was held on Monday 16th January 2012 at Bath Spa University’s Art and Design site, with our very own Jenny Holloway and JoJo Iles, manageress of the FashionCapital boutique ‘British Designers’

After a hiccup courtesy of the London Underground Jenny arrived just in time to candidly talk to a range of fashion design and business students from Bath Spa University and the City of Bath College. Thanks to Bath Spa Uni the seminar was held in a state of the art lecture theatre at the Sion Hill, Art & Design campus.

Jenny began by asking the students if they ‘would like to run their own business?’ And a good majority indicated that they did. She followed by asking ‘what areas of the industry they were interested in?’ which helped her tailor the seminar and the information she discussed. Keeping the talk informal and personable Jenny opened with her career story to date and then continued into the current state of the market and key points such as fast track fashion and local manufacturing to smaller buys and the growth of the e-tail market.

The seminar which lasted just over an hour included valuable information for creative, technical and business students. Ending with a Q & A session the feedback from those attending was extremely positive and Jenny is now looking forward to collaborating with JoJo again in March – this time as a panel guest on the ‘Bath in Fashion – Fashion Your Future’  careers advice forum.

14 January 2012 – Valentine’s and More…

Mid-January and the shops in Bath are well under way with their post Christmas sales! We at BD@FC Bath are also offering our very own fashion bargains which include Nina Bon Bina, Masato and Belles of London!

The fashion industry is rapidly changing; from fast track fashion and local manufacturing to smaller buys and essential e-tail sales. Jennifer Holloway explores how the industry is shifting and the various considerations new designers need to take on board when entering the fashion business today.

FashionCapital Director Jennifer Holloway has worked in the fashion sector for over twenty-five years. She began her career as a buyer and moved on to produce her own label, run a consultancy and work on various government funded projects. Her company FashionCapital Ltd has grown from its online portal roots to encompass a range of workshops, courses, retail outlets, events, a production workshop and a factory based in North London.

22 December 2011 – TCA Show and Christmas Tipple…

This week I popped over to the Big Smoke to catch up with the boss, AKA Jenny Holloway, as well as explore the London retail scene and catch the TCA Men’s Couture launch show. Bringing some flamboyance and military chic to the menswear arena TCA got their models working the dancefloor in high-heels. Some were more succuessful than others I must add. The event took place in London’s premier Gay Venue, the Shadow Lounge last night and showcased TCA’s Men’s Couture Militopia collection and signature pieces from their 1st collection Point 5. Tailoring with a showman’s twist plus a few commerical pieces that wouldn’t scare off the more reserved male. It was also great to hook up with the FashionCapital girls; Adriana, Jenny, Jemima and Jenni and have a little Christmas tipple.

19 December 2011 – Bertie Arrives!

As we count down the days to Christmas, BD@FC Bath is full of fantastic British designed clothing, hats, scarves, fascinators, belts, purses, bags and jewellery, guaranteed to put a smile on any face as they are opened on Christmas morning!

It’s Christmas week and BD@FC Bath is busy with customers looking for those exclusive & unique gifts for their loved ones!

We are excited to have an even fuller menswear section this week, which include PostHuman Wardrobe, Peregrine and TOT. Some of these items are being modelled beautifully by our new resident model ‘Bertie’ – all the way from St Austell in Cornwall! Thank you Bertie for coming to be part of our team!

 

We have a special discount on Belles of London now on for a limited period! This already is proving very popular, as customers snap up party dresses and jackets for the forthcoming festive celebrations!

15 December 2011 – Something for the Boys…

Just in…clever, functional andstylish menswear from Posthuman Wardrobe plus a selection of Christmas knits and practical jackets from Peregrine. Ticking all the right boxes Peregrine is a Bristol based label that is 8-generations old, taking a modern slant on English country classics all the garments are made inthe UK too. Completing the masculine ensemble we have handmade leather goods – bagsand belts by Somersetbased W. Blaikie.

Meanwhile, for the ladies we have afresh delivery of Goat knitwear, a selection of silk scarves from Belles, new designs from Giles Deacon’s assistant designer Masato plus a new range of handmade jewellery.

1 December 2011 – Christmas Crackers

Its Christmas mania here in Bath as people from far and wide travel into the city for the annual outdoor Christmas market. At the boutique we have gone for a decadent gold and purple window display which ties in well with the rest of Milsom Place.

New in we have some gorgeous designs from Jean-Pierre Braganza, handcrafted belts from Somerset based W. Blaikie and some elegant jewellery from the award winning green label Zinfinity.

As of next week we’ll have something for the boys too as a selection of designer menswear is due to land at BD@FC Bath for the very first time. We’ve also been busy planning into the New Year with an industry seminar aimed higher education students; ‘The Reality of the Fashion Business Today’ presented by our very own director Jenny Holloway. 24 November 2011 – A Little Something this Christmas

There’s no ignoring the fact that Christmas is well and truly on the way so with this in mind we have compiled ‘A Little Something’ for some unique designer gift ideas.

 

As per usual Christmas is all about glamour and sparkle, a time when you can pile it on and get away with it! At the boutique we have put together a party dress rail that won’t break the bank, a range of Belles of London designs priced from £40 – £75.

Joining us this week is the Somerset based bespoke leather accessories maker ‘W. Blaikie’. William has been handcrafting leather goods for over 30 years; he began at the tender age of 14 helping his grandfather and continued to refine his skills at Cordwainer’s College in London. His pieces are classic with lashing of quality and a quirky twist, come in and see for yourself.

Also in the pipeline is a menswear promotion, yes, we are bringing a selection of designer menswear into the boutique throughout December so watch this space.

10 November 2011 – Emma’s Shoot & the Big Switch On!

Our resident graduate Emma Ewer got creative styling a shoot with photographer Stephanie Swann www.stephanieswann.co.uk last weekend. The behind the scene images look fantastic shot in the New Forest complete with wild pigs! Check out the images which feature pieces from Zoe Boomer, SM Walker and Masato. We can’t wait to see the post production results. Meanwhile Emma is off this week due to a broken wrist – we hope you recover soon Em.

Christmas is very much on our minds here at the boutique and we are looking to create our Christmas window in time for the big switch-on next Thursday with John Cleese. As from the 17th we will be open for late night shopping every Thursday in the run up to the big day.

Tomorrow I will be heading over to Profile at One Marylebone to check out the latest batch of designers and their creations. Hopefully a few will be adding ‘BD@FC Bath’ to their stockists list as well.

New to the boutique is a Vintage British Designers section which already includes the likes of Jonathan Saunders, Matthew Williamson and Emma Cook.

27 October 2011 – Vote for British Designers Bath!

After our latest batch of deliveries the boutique is brimming with gorgeous Autumn/Winter designs. From vivid digital printed pieces by Tramp in Disguise to Sixties-esque shift dresses from Vanessa Treasure and of course wardrobe staples from our in-house regulars Belles of London. With so much choice our bank balances are seriously under threat!

Next week we will be collaborating once again with local photographers Tim Baker and April Samantha alongside Shoot DHS Models to capture the capsule Masato collection, against the elegant backdrop of Bath, of course. Also in the pipeline is a ‘Prepare to Party’ event gearing up to, dare I say it, Christmas. 28 September 2011 – An Indian Summer meets Mode

As we head into October it seems like the summer that almost happened has finally emerged! Glorious sunshine while those autumn leaves start to fall. Our regulars aren’t fooled they have been busy snapping up knitwear and jersey layering pieces in preparation for what’s to come.

On the agenda next week is Mode Fashion Show at Java, Bristol on Friday 7th October. Emma, our fashion graduate, has been busy preparing a range of 10 outfits to feature in the British Designers @FC section of the show. Others in the line-up include: Jolaby, Urban Outfitters, Motel, Bank, Gilly Woo and many others – plus of course a selection of designers currently stocked in the boutique. 14 September 2011 – Introducing Masato

Last Thursday Milsom Place invited women a unique ‘Dress to Impress’ event; an evening soiree to browse the latest collections while enjoying wine, nibbles, goodie bags and mini-treats. Here at British Designers our resident make-up artist extraordinaire Sophie Bee demonstrated the latest modern-60s look while new label Masato took centre stage with an exclusive selection of designs. Masato Jones currently assists Giles Deacon as well as working for Ghost and is tipped as one-to-watch over the next few seasons. Now into his second collection Masato’s 10-piece capsule collection is now stocked in Bath and some designs are exclusive to the boutique. Check out our Masato window and his designs as worn by Emma! Summer looks well and truly over here in Bath and customers have been asking for jackets, capes and knitwear as the temperatures continue to drop. To welcome in the autumn Milsom Place will be hosting ‘Dress to Impress’ an evening soiree open to all tomorrow (Thursday 8^thSeptember 6pm – 8pm). Those that attend will receive an exclusive goodie bag, drinks, nibbles, and treatments while checking out the new autumn collections. Tying in with this event British Designers will be introducing a new designer range by Masato Jones. Masato studied at Central Saint Martins and currently works with Giles Deacon and Ghost, his eponymous label is now into its second season and he is definitely a name to watch as he begins to develop his label.

Also arriving in store tomorrow is the established, spanning eight-generations in the business, British label Peregrine. Classic knits and jackets are given a designer twist and we have no doubt that this label will do well with the Bath market.

Alongside the new collections our resident make-up artist Sophie Bee will be on hand to demonstrate the trends and colours to compliment the season while mini massages and hair styling will take place within the other stores around the complex.

3 August 2011 The latest from British Designers @ FashionCapital Bath

August and the wee city of Bath is awash with visitors and tourists. Those that visit the boutique will often ask if they can find us online so we are currently in the process of creating our own section on FCBoutique.co.uk – this should be ready mid-August and we are excited to join the instant world of e-tail.

We are also planning a sample / end-of-line sale in conjunction with other Bath independents at the end of August – if you are stocked at the Bath boutique and would like your pieces to go into this sale then please contact me jojo@fashioncapital.co.uk and list the items and the prices that you would like to include. Unlike London sample sales are rare in Bath so we hope to publicize the weekend sale well and receive a good turn out. In order to compete with sales elsewhere please round your figures down e.g. £20, £40, £50.

London Fashion Week is looming and it is great to see some of our boutique regulars either showing on the catwalk, the BFC exhibition or off-schedule at the likes of Vauxhall Fashion Scout – keep your eyes peeled for Christian Blanken, Jean-Pierre Braganza, PPQ, Akong and Paolita at Somerset House this September.

27 July 2011 – Summer’s juiciest shade…

 

New to the boutique we have Rainbow Winters and her capsule range of printed pieces that react and change colour when exposed to sunlight or water.

For evening glamour we have exquisite dresses from Frocked de la Valliere and Danny Tang.

We still have no news with regards to BaNES council and our business rates review, however we have received some staunch support from MP’s, Bath Spa University and Bath Chamber of Commerce so we are hoping for a positive outcome.

It’s always a pleasant surprise to receive a letter from the House of Commons! Thanks to Don Foster MP for his supportive words and encouragement on our ongoing rate debate with B&NES. Also letters of support from Louise Pickles at Bath Spa University and the Executive Director at Bath Chamber of Commerce. In February 2011 British Designers@FashionCapital took part in a charity fashion show hosted at the Assembly Rooms in Bath. The show was to raise money for a local charity called the Trauma Recovery Centre which works together with local police and services to help children recover from serious trauma. Without the help and contribution of this store we would not have been able to raise as much money and awareness as we did.

Please reconsider charging FashionCapital full commercial rates as they are all about helping young designers follow their dreams. They are a non-for- profit business and do not have the funds to meet these payments. By charging this fee you are not only letting go of FashionCapital but you are ruining the futures of young designers that depend on FashionCapital and a community that has grown with us.

British Designers@ Fashion Capital is embracing all these initiatives. They work on projects with Fashion/Photography/Retail students to develop skills that will make them ready for the work place. BD@FC provides a lifeline for small independent designers like me. I’m able to gain an income through sales as well as gaining much needed promotion. BD@FC sells a diverse and exciting mix of labels which makes it a unique independent shop.

BD@FC has had a positive impact on hundreds of people since its opening and I hope it can be allowed to continue to do so.

The British Designers Boutique was the first shop to stock my fascinators five months ago, and has been instrumental in gaining further exposure for my brand.  They have been very supportive and encouraging throughout, offering invaluable advice and workshops on how to build a fashion brand. They also asked me to take part in Bath Fashion Week which was a great opportunity, and subsequently asked me to create a window display especially for the boutique, further aiding my brand awareness.

I am sure the people of Bath, as well as the many visiting tourists have benefited greatly from their presence, offering new and exciting fashion that stands out from the uniform high street brands. I think it is imperative not-for-profit organisations like this are supported as they champion independent designers and act as a stepping stone into the industry. The British Designers Boutique puts Bath on the fashion map and is a great asset to the city, so long may it continue!

When I finished my MA at Bath Spa I found it very difficult to find stockists for my embroidered jewellery as it is quite difficult to categorise. Being able to showcase it at the British Designers @ Fashion Capital Boutique in Bath has given me the chance to test the market and be seen in a prime retail site which would not have been possible otherwise. It is incredibly tough for any new and emerging designer to get their work seen and I think the way in which the boutique encourages local talent is amazing and inspiring.

Greetings from gorgeous Bath, this week we have been utilising Bath as an elegant backdrop with a shoot for Joshua Riches winning capsule collection and an editorial shoot using a mix of designers from the boutique. It was a pleasure to work with the photographer April Samantha Barrie based in Bath and local model agency Shoot DHS Models. The results are already being edited and from what I have seen so far – look fantastic. Can’t wait to share these with you next week. 6th July 2011 – Bath Beach Bodies

 

This week at the boutique we have been all about holiday & beachwear. As seen in the latest issue of Bath Life magazine Paolita leads the way in the swimwear stakes with its curve enhancing swimsuits featuring cut-away sections and vibrant paisley prints. Rhys Ifans was clearly impressed as he brought Anna Friel in to try on most of the Paolita range. She ended up buying the Odalisque swimsuit and the Cupid’s Kiss bikini as well as the Ash one-shouldered dress by Tramp in Disguise – very Ibiza rocks!

 

 

 

New in at the boutique we have a capsule collection from ‘Rainbow Winters’, designed by Amy Winters all the pieces feature specialist inks which change colour on reaction to sunlight and water. Also just in are some incredibly glamorous evening frocks from Danny Tang and Goat London are set to return to the boutique this coming week. We look forward to having them back.

 

We currently have some great reductions in-store on designs that you definitely won’t find on the High Street. Tomorrow we will be shooting Joshua Riches (competition winner) capsule collection in collaboration with ShootDHS Models and we’ll share the results from that next week.

29 June 2011 – Summer Sunshine – Summer Sales

As mentioned over the past two weeks the future of the boutique is in question as we are currently in dispute with Bath & North East Somerset council over rates. A reviewed decision has yet to be made from the council and we thank those who have signed and supported our petition so far. Louise Pickles, Fashion course leader at Bath Spa University has shown her support and we are currently in touch with retail guru Mary Portas and her ‘Save Our High Street’ campaign. The story featured in this weeks’ Bath Chronicle and ironically the images in the Bath Spa graduate show report on the very same page as our article feature several designs from the ASOS Black project we ran with the 2^nd Year students.

 

 

On a lighter note don’t forget it’s the Paolita designer swimwear discount day at the boutique tomorrow Thursday 30^th. Paolita’s pieces are beautifully cut to enhance those female curves and in a selection of vibrant prints and colours. Our mannequins are dressed and ready – here’s a sneaky peek.

We’ve also got some amazing bargains in our Summer Sale from Isy & Peeps, Belles of London, Tramp in Disguise, Jean-Pierre Braganza, Zoe Boomer and S M Walker. Bora Aksu is due to return with new stock later this week and also due are some exclusive interactive designs from Rainbow Winters and evening dress drama from Danny Tang – can’t wait to see those. 22 June 2011 – Grand Grads

June is all about the grads and Bath is no exception as we were invited to view the latest designs from Bath Spa’s 2011 graduates. Set in the decadent ballroom of Bath’s Assembly Rooms show producer John Wolford made the most of the elegant architectural features creating picture perfect scenes for each collection. Personal favourites included ‘Chercher La Femme’ by Hope Burridge – refined daywear pieces in relaxed 1920’s shapes featuring delicate laser-cut leather sections and accessories – beautiful and commercially desirable. Grace Butler combined intricate cut-work with strong colour for a stylish modern look, while Isabella Kent-Webb worked vintage silhouettes with oversize bows and pleating.

Also on show were designs from 1st and 2nd Year students and it was fantastic to see pieces from the FashionCapital ASOS Black project working the catwalk. Louise Pickles, the Course Leader, also thanked FashionCapital amongst others for working with the students and offering realistic insight into the fashion world.

 

New in at the boutique: Competition winner Joshua Riches samples have arrived and we are arranging a shoot as we speak. We have some gorgeous supple eel skin oversize clutches and purses from Heidi Klein and we have just collaborated on a shoot with stylist Ashley Cover and photographer Adam Robertson.

15 June 2011 – SAVE OUR SHOP

What crazy times we are living in when those trusty retail names you see for decades across the country simply go to the wall! When Bath & North East Somerset council got back to us (after almost 10 months) to say they would not be granting us rate relief for our not-for-profit concern my heart sank. Does this mark the end of the road for British Designers in Bath? We have always stated that we could never afford to pay full commercial rates, after all, the boutique is about promoting and selling on behalf of our young British Designers. But we refuse to give up, we will appeal against this decision and we intend to find a way foward! In the meantime please read the below and click to sign our online petition – and feel free to forward the link on too. Thank you.

British Designers@FashionCapital offers retail support to London Fashion Week designers alongside new talent. Since opening the Bath boutique in September the project has engaged with the local community, up-and-coming designers and students studying at Bath Spa University giving them essential insight into the tough fashion industry. The feedback from customers has been incredibly positive – they love the unique product offer, the designer discounts and the fact they are supporting UK based businesses. Not forgetting to add the landlord of Milsom Place, L&R Group and their continued support and enthusiasm for this unique retail concept.

FashionCapital operates on a not-for-profit basis and only takes a small commission from each sale to cover running and staffing costs; a large proportion of each sale goes directly to the designer. To operate at this level, as the company has in the South East, the outlet needs the backing of the local council and to be awarded discretionary rate relief. British Designers, 14 Milsom Place, Bath has been operating on the understanding that the council would not charge full commercial rates in light of the company’s not-for-profit status and that it engages with the community and local educational bodies.

However, after 10 months of waiting for a response Bath & North East Somerset council have concluded that British Designers must pay full commercial rates. We are currently appealing against this but if the council refuse to alter their decision we will be forced to close immediately and will no longer be able to support designers with a retail outlet in the South West. Please do not let this happen, Britain is already becoming a clone town country with the same high street chains wherever you go. 8 June 2011 – Future Fashion: Students, Grades & Grads

We may well be surrounded by Paolita beachwear and vibrant Tramp in Disguise maxi dresses but the Great British weather seems to have other plans this week. Our style tip for this mood swing climate is to layer up those summer dresses with a lightweight trench coat, fabulous umbrella and a bright red smile!

Last week we announced Chloe Victoria Jones as the winner of our Bath Spa Uni external project for 2^nd Year fashion students. Her project work has been on display on the FashionCapital stand at Graduate Fashion Week for the past four days and will also be on show at this September’s Profile event. Meanwhile, over at the boutique we’ve had another delivery of Jean Pierre Braganza, a firm favourite with the staff and clientele of Bath, some additional printed pieces from Tramp in Disguise (just as good as Christopher Kane’s universe inspired prints only a lot more affordable!)and handmade bags and digital print scarves from Soomin.

I have been attending the local grad shows and my top picks from the UWE Fashion & Textiles show include: innovative, sculptural knitwear by Sarah Cassidy and Johanna Posselt-Walsh, graphic origami pieces by Elaine Yeoh and intricate tailoring by Rei Tan. Well done to all the students always great to see inspirational ideas on home ground.

1 June 2011 – ASOS Black Project plus new in at the boutique…

Greetings from the Georgian City. Here in Bath there has been music and performances galore as the Music Fest and Bath Fringe are well underway attracting visitors and locals alike.

Since the end of March British Designers & FashionCapital have been working with 2^nd Year students from Bath Spa University on an external design module. Students could choose whether to design a capsule range for ASOS Black or Belles of London to sell at the Clothes Show. The project requested research of the labels and their competitors before using creative inspiration to produce a capsule range. The final crits took place at the Workshop just over a week ago and Jenny was highly impressed with the standard of work on show.

Jenny Holloway, director of FashionCapital, Kosa Ralevic, Workshop and Factory manager, and JoJo Iles, manager of the British Designers@FC Boutique in Bath have independently looked at the work and have unanimously agreed that Chloe Victoria Jones is the project winner. Congratulations Chloe, she will now have her project work on display on the FashionCapital stand at Graduate Fashion Week, her pieces will also be showcased at the Profile show for up and coming designers in Mayfair, London this September and her work will be shown to ASOS buyers and could possibly secure orders. Exciting news and we will keep you updated with the latest developments.

Also at the boutique in Bath we have had some new arrivals courtesy of Claudia Polo…fedora hats and vegetable ivory jewellery, sale samples from Hemyca, who incidentally won the award for brightest, most directional brand at ‘Fashion Press Week’ last week. Plus a few more vibrant print designs from Tramp in Disguise. As one customer said British Designers is like “a capsule department store full of fashion goodies.”

25 May 2011 – Students, samples and sales

It has been another action packed week at British Designers@FashionCapital in Bath. First and foremost we would like to congratulate all the Bath Spa 2nd Year fashion degree students on completing the brief we set them at the end of March. Students were given the choice of designing a capsule range for ASOS Black or Belles of London at the Clothes Show. The majority selected ASOS Black as their target client and the range of work on display was highly impressive. Jenny Holloway commented: “Overall I was very impressed with the standards of presentation, design content, quality of samples and the actual interpretation of the initial brief.” The FashionCapital team are currently reviewing all the students work and will be announcing an overall winner in due course.

The first samples of winning South West competition designer, Joshua Riches, have been produced by the team at the workshop and we look forward to having the capsule range available to sell in store soon!

Meanwhile, new in at the boutique we have some more of S M Walker’s show stopping leather collars and a selection of her leather clutch bags, along with new stock in from Belles of London and Jolaby.

We’ve been hitting the local headlines once again this week this time featuring our South West Competition winner Joshua Riches. His designs are in production as we speak and will soon be available to try and buy at the boutique, we’ll keep you updated.

Joshua and his fellow 2^nd Year students will be heading to the London workshop once again this Friday to present their final designs for the ASOS Black / Clothes Show brief. Good luck to all of them, we already saw some innovative ideas emerging a few weeks ago and this brief could provide the unique opportunity of getting in with the country’s leading online fashion retailer! Last Saturday film maker Michael Stylianou collaborated with the Bath boutique to create a short promo film featuring several of our designers. Thank-you to Alexis the model from Shoot DHS Models, so professional and adaptable – she looked great in everything! Also to No 3 Hair salon for stepping in at the last minute, Emma for her styling and David for generally helping out and making us all laugh. It was a great day and we hope to share the short film with you soon.

9 May 2011 – Samples and Shoots!

In the news: South West Womenswear Design Competition Winner Joshua Riches will feature the Bath Chronicle this week and samples of his designs are being made up at the Workshop as we speak.

This Saturday 14^th photographer and film maker Michael Stylianou will be shooting designs from the boutique – come down and have a look at a fashion shoot in progress 10am – 4pm.

New in at the boutique; fresh jewellery pieces from sustainable jewellery brand Le Ju, vibrant summer print dresses and separates from Zoe Boomer and essential linen separates from the Belles of London.

20 April 2011 – Fascinators and Factories

This week myself and 13 Bath Spa Uni students descended on the FashionCapital workshop and factory in North London. After an insightful tour of the manufacturing process Jenny Holloway and I held individual crit sessions to view the student’s project progress thus far. (The 2^nd Year students were asked to design a capsule range of 6-pieces for either ASOS Black or Belles of London.) Both Jenny and I were very impressed with the standard of design work coming through and are really looking forward to seeing those initial design ideas develop into wearable garments.

Winner of the South West Design Competition Joshua Riches was also in tow and the workshop team went through his sketches to finalize measurements and details. The plan is to have Joshua’s range in the Bath boutique by mid-summer and of course we will be adding regular updates every step of the way.

Meanwhile at the boutique FiFi Venus has created a vibrant window display featuring her floral headpieces and the feedback has already been fantastic.

13 April 2011 – Sunshine and Students

Greetings from Bath! It seems retail is weather reliant as once the sun starts shinning and the breeze warms up shoppers will happily roam the streets donning their favourite pair of sunglasses. We have definitely noticed a pick up in trade over the last few weeks and long may it continue. Best sellers include: Jolaby draped dresses, cropped linen jackets by Belles of London and chiffon cocktail dresses by Bora Aksu.

As for our external degree project with 2^nd Year Bath Spa students we have invited them over to the Workshop and Factory in London next week for their mid-project crit. Jenny and I are looking forward to seeing their initial research and designs. More about this next week.

After much debate and discussion the FashionCapital judging panel of the ‘South West Womenswear Design Competition’ have agreed on a winning designer; well done to Joshua Riches from Bath, his combination of unique design details, easy-to-wear shapes and rich colour palette won the panel over. Joshua will now be invited to the workshop to select fabrics and the team there will begin to create the first samples of his capsule range.

Exciting times! We’ll keep you informed of all the latest developments.

 

27 March 2011  Bath in Fashion and don’t forget your Mother!

Take a butchers at our Bath in Fashion pics, it’s been one full-on week at British Designers, Bath. Our very own Jenny Holloway kicked off the proceedings with her insightful talk ‘From Design Sketch to Shop Floor’, to a fully packed to standing room. This was followed by a project briefing directed at 2nd Year Fashion Design students at Bath Spa University. Anna Coverdale and her team from ‘Fabulous Bijoux’ introduced their latest jewellery collection while show producer John Walford did us proud with a stunning show ‘Fashion & Fizz’ at the Roman Baths. Our designers complete with headpieces by Fifi Venus, looked incredibly elegant against the historic backdrop. If that wasn’t enough boutique manager JoJo was snapped by street style photographers wearing PPQ and we collaborated with Waterstones on Milsom Street with a Live Mannequin event. Film maker Michael Stylianou rounded off the week shooting our two resident models in and around the streets of Bath…watch out for the film which will be screened in the boutique at the end of April.

 

 

Meanwhile new in we have new stock from Jean-Pierre Braganza, Louise Amstrup and swimwear label Paolita plus Bath Spa graduate Stefanie England joins us with her range of eveningwear. In the accessories department we have vintage style bags by Cloth Magpie, leather designs from Milo & Saint alongside fresh jewellery from Jolita and Fabulous Bijoux plus, not forgetting to mention, headpieces by Fifi Venus.

24 March 2011 – Bath in Fashion

Bath in Fashion has kicked off and commencing the proceedings was our very own Jenny Holloway. Her ‘Behind the Seams’; from design sketch to shop floor was packed to standing and Jenny was mobbed for her expertise at the end. We have now given the Bath Spa University 2nd Year students their external brief project and we are excited to see what creations will emerge for either the Clothes Show market or ASOS Black label.

 

Voting continues with our South West Womenswear Design Competition and we will be making our final decision on the winner in the coming week.

Coming up; we will be showing at Fashion & Fizz, a catwalk and champagne extravaganza set against the Roman Baths and taking part in Bath’s live mannequin event this Saturday 26^th, pics to follow next week.

Greetings from Bath! We have another show fitting underway as I type this. Models from Bath Spa University are preparing for their annual show in aid of Sue Ryder charity. Once again to be held at the stunning Assembly Rooms on the 16th March – I have to say the girls are looking fabulous in our British Designers creations. Greetings from Bath.

British Designers kicked off the Freedom Fashion show in Bath’s elegant Assembly Rooms last week with a vibrant colour blocking story. The models did exceptionally well to bring the garments to life and funds were raised for a great cause. We have more shows on the agenda throughout March so watch this space! The boutique is certainly getting out there as our designers feature in a 6-page spread on Bath fashion in ‘The Bath Magazine’ this month. We have also been busy with the design competition – I have been in a scanning and uploading frenzy as lots of last minute entries have come in – more on this next week!

It’s been another busy week at the Bath branch of British Designers@FashionCapital. We’ve had quite a few journalists dropping in to see what the boutique is all about and it’s always great to see positive copy on the concept in printed publications. Our latest tearsheet comes all the way from Northern Ireland – En Vie Magazine featured Bath in it’s travel section and quoted our boutique as a “hidden gem” and of course were thrilled that local girl Zoe Boomer was included in our designer mix.

 

 

We’ve also had Eloise Atwell in this week, a local designer and seamstress, Eloise has created a dress out of origami pieces of paper. In celebration of London Fashion Week while addressing the recycling issue – the dress is indeed a work of art and Eloise plans to add further pieces to design in the coming weeks.

 

 

 

 

9 February 2011

Along with our designer competition and charity fashion show (18^th Feb) our attention has turned to ‘Bath in Fashion’ – a week long event celebrating all things stylish. This year the event is scheduled for 23^rd to 27^thMarch and includes a talk by Iain R Webb, shows styled by Rebekah Roy, a fashion cutting workshop with Julian Roberts plus a presentation on the production process by our very own Jenny Holloway (more details below.) British Designers@FashionCapital has been getting involved every step of the way and last week we went on location for a fashion shoot with photographer Marko Dutka and 3 fashion models at the Bath Thermae Spa – the results will be used to promote the event and as a fashion spread in The Bath Magazine next month and from what we have seen so far are rather stunning.

There’s so much going on at the Bath branch of British Designers that it’s hard to know where to begin.

We have received our first entries for the Womenswear Design Competition plus we were recently featured in the local paper ‘The Bath Chronicle’ with a great write-up and support for the competition.

New in store we have collections from Jolaby, Ceci and Emma Ewer in the ‘emerging’ room while PPQ have updated their range in the London Fashion Week space. One of our best sellers GOAT London has now moved on to our London branch – we had a great few months with them and are currently looking for new knitwear designers to fill their shoes. Coming soon…leather bags from S M Walker and Milo & Saint, spring pieces from Nina Bon Bina and something quite unexpected from cult couturier Ziad Ghanem.

While many designers are gearing up for the international catwalk circuit of New York, London, Milan and Paris we will be adding our own touch of fashion glamour to the elegant surroundings of the Assembly Rooms here in Bath. On 18th February designs from British Designers will open the Freedom Fashion Show to showcase spring’s bold block colour trend. The black tie event will be raising essential funds for the Trauma Recovery Centre due to open later this year – the first of its kind to open in the Bath area.

16January 2011 – Competitions & Capsule Collections

It has been an exciting week here at British Designers Bath as we went live with our Design Competition. Open to creative but currently unemployed individuals based in the South West the competition invites entrants to design a capsule womenswear collection of 4 – 6 pieces for Spring/Summer 2011. After seeing Emma Ewer’s (our grad intern) final year collection I suggested that she create a window display featuring her designs. The capsule range is made-up clean-lined luxurious fabrics that drape and skim the body. Inspired by Bath some of the designs feature printed simple line sketches of Bath locations – a subtle but a chic reflection of Bath none the less. Emma was thrilled when a customer tried on and bought her velvet dress the first day the display went up. I for one was very proud and I hope this will encourage her to take her fashion ideas further,

9 January 2011 – Back to Business

I trust you all had a relaxing festive and New Year break and are ready to face the New Year with enthusiasm and gusto! The world of fashion never sleeps and we may only be a week in to 2011 but already the agenda is getting busier by the minute!

On the cards we have a design competition, a fashion show and projects with local students. First off I must inform you that Goat is about the leave the building. Known for their quality cashmere, chunky knits and clean separates, well, a certain Ms Beckham is a fan so who are we to argue, you can now pick up Goat for a limited 2 week period (until 23rd Jan) with an additional 20% off – some great pieces and prices abound – so don’t miss out! The Bath ladies and the BD@FC team will miss this best selling range for sure.

 

Popping into the boutique of late was fashion editor and journalist Sasha Wilkins AKA Liberty London Girl. Staying with friends in near-by Box over Christmas she stumbled upon our Bath boutique and was pleasantly surprised to see Osman, Felder Felder and Hannah Marshall in this neck of the woods.

Must go lots to organise, more on the exciting design competition next time.

Just in at the boutique…a new jewellery range by Shalke, a former fashion model and catwalk circuit regular, London based Shalke has turned her creative eye to handcrafted jewellery comprising of semi-precious stones. 12 December 2010 – Fashion & Fromage!

Shoppers at the boutique have been getting in the festive spirit this week buying up pieces that shimmer and sparkle. We livened up the proceedings with a live band: ‘Fromage en Feu’ which is described as the most danceable gypsy music in the South West! Customers danced, drank and enjoyed – while a few even made some purchases. ‘Fromage’ did us proud with a non-stop two hour set and feedback from customers was fantastic.

 

Another bonus for customers at the Bath branch this week is a ‘Christmas Clearance’ rail of designer pieces at knock down prices – for a limited period only. Well, we do like to keep our clientele happy.

Earlier in the week we said goodbye to Gwendolyn Carrie’s range of shoes and boots as they headed back to GC HQ in London. It was sad to see the range go but for Gwendolyn Carrie devotees we do still stock a great range of leather goods from purses to travel wallets – the quality of which is exceptional.

New to the boutique is a luxe t-shirt and vest range from sustainable label ‘Knock on the Door’. All the pieces have been created from upcycled / recycled fabric and carry very reasonable price points too. We also have a selection of incredibly glamorous party dresses from Elsa Haag and I particularly love the one-shouldered silver/grey ‘Dannii’ dress – perfect for New Year’s Eve.

24^th November 2010 – Bling Bras & Bracelets

 

Never a dull moment at the boutique we’ve had new stock from Goat– and in larger sizes too, jewellery from Be Inspired, statement rings from Jolita and handmade corsets from Emma Houghton – perfect for creating the wow factor during the party season.

Meanwhile Emma, our grad intern, and I have been thinking visual merchandising – the brief: to create a Christmas party window that is simple, stunning and yet effective. Our mannequins have been transformed into party girls and I particularly love the satin twisted dress in steel grey by Avsh Alom Gur – it’s so elegant the way it hangs like a cape over the shoulders. We’ve added a liberal dose of bling too – it’s amazing how many customers are drawn in by shimmer and sparkle. Also glamming up the windows are some decorations courtesy of ‘December 25^th’ – a festive shop in Bath that’s open all year round, thanks to Emma knowing the owner.

 

 

The boutique is now in good company with Hannah Dulcie’s lingerie boutique opening opposite. I popped in to the champagne launch last Friday, well, it would be rude not to, and was impressed with the beautiful range of high end underwear on display. The boutique is kitted out like a sensuous boudoir and is bound to do well in the run up to Christmas.

New In…

In the London Fashion Week room…new designs from Bora Aksu as well as some vibrant silk pieces by Avsh Alom Gur. Shoe sculptress Atalanta Weller has reduced her unique footwear by 50% and there is a further 20% reduction on Felder Felder frocks.

Meanwhile in the emerging designers room Belles of London have introduced a range of winter capes to keep those chills at bay and we have some vintage inspired sparkle courtesy of Liquorish (recently featured on The Apprentice). Further reductions in this section come courtesy of Afira, Be Inspired and Bath Spa graduate Natalie Sarah Ellis. While ethical t-shirt label Colder Shoulder has introduced a special offer – 2 t’s for £35 in the run up to Christmas.

24 October 2010 – Fashion Grads ‘n’ Glad Rags

 

While there’s no doubt that the London Fashion Week designers draw the customers into the boutique we are always keen to give up and coming names the chance to shine. For the last few weeks we have featured a complete autumn look by Bath Spa Fashion Design graduate Natalie S Ellis in the main window. Her black/brown panelled trousers, printed chiffon blouse and fox fur gillet compliment the warm rustic tones of autumn’s falling leaves perfectly. Our in-house intern Emma Ewer completed the outfit with a velvet chain tuxedo necklace by Akong London.

Meanwhile it’s been a week of highs and lows at the boutique. From suspicious customers to fire alarm alerts there’s always something happening! We received some seasonal stock from Zoe Boomer more beautiful silks and jerseys in flattering clean lines. Belles of London sent over some Christmas sparkle, no getting away from the fact that party season is well on its way. And we also received a gorgeous red wool belted Jolaby coat with dramatic high collar which I featured in the window. In less than a day it had sold to one very happy customer who spotted it the night before – she fell in love with it instantly and was over the moon that it was the perfect fit.

 

 

The ladies of Bath have yet to get into the party spirit so we are planning a November event themed around fabulous ‘look at me’ fashion and live music. More on that later.

Style Forums, Sales Queens and A Call for Super Accessory Designers

 

It was interesting to be part of the Milsom Place Style Forum day with personal stylist Emmeline Stevens last week. Not only did Emmeline dispel the illusion that you have to be a rich celeb to work with a personal stylist but she also opened new eyes to the great designer bargains currently at the boutique. Our graduate intern Emma Ewer also got the chance to display her final year collection and her soft pleated velvets got the ladies gushing. No doubt we will be working with Emmeline and her team again soon.

In store we have two resident sales assistants Serena and Sarah-Jane both of which are super friendly and helpful – essential in a designer environment. New in store – we are also preparing for the oncoming party season with some blinging eye-catching bags from Vangil.

This week the BD@FC boutique will be participating with Milsom Place in a Style Forum. Taking place on Saturday 9th October fashion guru Emmeline Stevens will lead the event to include talks on key trends, styles to suit your shape and a tour of the fashion retailers situated in Milsom Place complex. There will also be beauty makeovers, sushi nibbles, fizz and discount offers from a selection of the participating stores. Sessions with Emmeline from The image Consulting Company are scheduled at 12.00 noon, 2.00pm and 4.00 pm and the BD@FC team will be on hand to talk about our in-store designers and great pieces we have on offer. Should be a fun day for all.

Hope you all had a great Fashion Week.

To celebrate London Fashion Week the team at the ‘British Designers’ boutique have created a catwalk installation featuring key pieces from Jean-Pierre Braganza, Osman, Felder Felder, PPQ and Hannah Marshall. The installation currently occupies unit 17 at Milsom Place – a floor to ceiling glass space often used by artists and pop-up projects. In front of a silhouetted audience our catwalk models line-up & pose to perfection alongside show footage projecting creations from our resident designers (providing a much needed viewing distraction for those queuing for a spot of lunch or dinner at Jamie’s). We will be changing the display to feature more designers over the coming week as we have the space until the 4^th October.

15 September 2010 – Staff, sales & sizes…

It has been a hectic first week at the Bath branch of British Designers@FashionCapital, Stef and I have been on the case with staffing and have met two great candidates from Bath Spa University. One of which, Kathryn, will be starting with us tomorrow.

Feedback thus far has been great and from the London Fashion Week camp Jean-Pierre Braganza and Goat are gaining great interest and from the emerging designer’s room Eva Evanovich has been getting plenty of attention. Local resident and WWD journalist Lesley Field has been in twice while another customer commented that the boutique was a “slice of London in the heart of Bath.”

The only negative, and often reported issue in the press, was related to sizing and customers suggesting that not enough larger sizes are available. This view has been sent on to the designers – I have to say it does seem strange that while the average woman in the UK is a size 14 – this size is classed as the largest in the designer arena. More on that later.

5th September 2010 – And we’re open for business…

 

So much has happened since I last blogged it’s a job to know where to begin. In typically ‘fashionably late’ style most of the deliveries arrived in the latter part of delivery week with some even arriving on opening day! It was crescendo time as everything prepared during the last few weeks came to fruition.

 

Even though I do say it myself the boutique looks fantastic – from the window displays to the stock to the final touches. However, as with all new businesses we certainly had our fair share of ‘teething troubles’! The biggest and most detrimental of them all was the card reader failing to connect. In today’s retail world – no card reader equals no sales – not good! It’s at times like these when all you can do is keep calm and weigh up the possible options logically. Fortunately Stef, who also worked on the Bicester project, kept a level head and once it became apparent that the situation would not be rectified in time for the launch we decided that a closed door ‘preview evening’ was the way to go.

 

As for the launch party – well, it thankfully all came together despite the fact that Stef and I had to spend a good portion of time on the card reader issue! At this point in the project it was also time to say farewell to Vanessa, she handed in her notice a month ago to venture into pastures new – and I wish her well.

 

To launch the boutique we invited local press, industry figures and potential customers to enjoy a very British ‘high tea high fashion’ experience and my tea ladies, an amalgam of family and friends, did us proud with delicate bite sized cakes on vintage china, tea and of course champagne. A steady flow of faces ranged from Bath Life Magazine to renowned journalist Iain R Webb. The local newspaper ‘The Bath Chronicle’ came in to shoot Bath grad – Natalie Ellis’ collection on our model Bek – alongside Louise Pickles – the fashion design course director at Bath Spa Uni. A good time was had by all and by the end of the evening Stef and I were ready for a serious amount of shut eye. I will add coverage from the launch in due course.

Wallpaper, wayward interviewees and chance encounter with Mr. John Cleese

 

The shop prep continues from arranging security options to hanging wallpaper to planning the launch party. Just when you think you have thought of everything another spanner is thrown in the works. Call me naïve but I didn’t know that you needed a license to play background music in a shop! What next – a license for breathing in public air! After a successful purchase of 4 lovely speakers on e-bay I set about researching the criteria for this music licence and swiftly applied for one online.

 

The search for staff has been somewhat of a disaster, after setting appointments for the 18^th not one single applicant bothered to turn up! Megan, from head office, had travelled all the way over from Brighton prepared and ready to question and interview! Fortunately all was not lost as she additionally ferried over two mannequins. So what happened to the applicants? One e-mailed in ill – at the very last minute, another had facial bruising after an epileptic fit earlier in the week and two were ‘no shows’. So it’s back to the drawing board! We have since received more interested applicants and have decided that fashion experience or study needs to be at the candidate’s core in order for this project to work. Will let you know if we manage to interview and employ next week.

 

Meanwhile I was invited by local jewellery designer, Jennifer Wade, to view her new collection and drink champagne at the Royal Crescent Hotel, well, it would be rude not to! Had a surreal moment when I spotted John Cleese next to the jewellery stand wearing one of her rather feminine designs. Now there’s a talking point!

The BD@FC window graphics have arrived…

 

This week we’ve been mucking in and getting dirty – painting, cleaning and shifting. The window graphics guy from ‘Bath Signs’ came and applied our logo to the two front windows and glass screen that leads to the fitting rooms. Feels like the place is really starting to take shape, although still so much to do before the 1st!

JoJo’s Blog – Boutique Staff & Boutique Decor

 

My head is swirling with boutique business. After much discussion about the windows we have decided to go for backdrop flats that can be painted, wall-papered and changed on a regular basis. It definitely provides a more flexible option than getting posters printed up and we can unleash the creative monsters from within too, can’t wait!

 

The designer confirmations are looking great, thanks to Vanessa and all her chasing up. We understand it’s a tricky time of year with many away on their summer holidays or stuck in the studio preparing for fashion week and accompanying trade shows.

 

At present we are looking to recruit a boutique manager and assistant and have started to advertise for suitable candidates. While we are interested in recruiting from all walks of life we have also signed up for a back-to-work initiative implemented by Creative Process. The initiative provides opportunities for young adults 18 – 24 to get back into work if they have been unemployed for six months or more. Given the current economic climate and the amount of empty retail units across the country we are optimistic that the perfect candidates are out there.

 

As for the PR side we’ve already had some great coverage from trade and local (South West) press…and there’s more to follow. Now we are keen to entice consumer press with the gorgeous pieces we have coming in store – so preparation of a new release is on my very long ‘to do’ list.

Fashionable Bath

 

Where do I begin, I feel a bit like a naughty schoolgirl that’s not done her homework for a while. The last week has been a medley of press requests, interviews, window graphics, credit card terminals, BT phone lines and general sorting out of what is to be done to the shop. At the weekend Vanessa and I got friendly with our resident mannequins, they look great we just need to clothe them now! We also tested their modelling skills in a shoot for the local paper. Press coverage on the boutique is starting to kick in and I was particularly enchanted by this piece of coverage by style blogger Fashion Bratt…

 

Gotta love the fashion capitals of the world… Paris, London, New York…. Bath? Well, yeah actually Bath is pretty fashionable. Ok so it might not be home to the garment district or Boulevard Haussmann or have its own fashion week…. but it does have a reputable fashion department at Bath Spa University, a fashion museum and numerous independent boutiques lining its antique streets, not to mention an influx of 4.4 million tourists every year. (It is also home to love of my life Crispin Mills of Kula Shaker… but we won’t go into that now.)

 

So with all this in mind it seems right that Bath should house a boutique that showcases some of the best new British talent. Bath will now have a permanent British Designers Boutique, quenching the fashion thirst of several core markets, from the affluent residents of The Royal Crescent to fashion savvy students – because the boutique will not only stock the work of established designers but it also aims to expose local talent, and will be working with the Universities.

 

Lots to do and so little time.

The BD@FC Boutique – the shop floor

 

We have been so fortunate to bag a fantastic unit in the heart of Milsom Place. The exposed ceiling beams and stone walls give a classic feel while the glass and steel add a modern twist. The space is fitted out but there is still more we need to do before the unit distinctively becomes the British Designers boutique. Watch over the coming weeks as we transform the space.

British Designers Boutique JoJo’s Blog Week 1

 

After months of waiting the go-ahead for the boutique in Bath took me, somewhat, by surprise. While Vanessa got busy liaising with the various designers we plan to stock, as well as organising and writing lists as long as the M25, I have been alternating between PR and admin duties.

 

There’s no doubt that our other retail concepts have worked very well but we are keen to ensure that the Bath version has a unique flavour of its own so I have been contacting the University and various designers based locally. The idea is that we provide a place that is inspirational and supportive and that we also broaden the retail concept to include external projects.

 

The boutique situated in Milsom place is really airy and light, a stylish mix of modern and classic and while it is fitted out we still have a fair amount to do before it is anywhere near ready.

 

This first week for me was all about the press release. Nicky, the PR for Milsom Place needed a copy A.S.A.P. as she’s about to go on holiday for 3 weeks – all a bit tricky due to the fact we are still in the midst of getting designers on board and finalizing details. Still, I got there in the end, even if it did mean working on into the night! The release is compiled complete with images and the message is ready to be delivered – the British Designers boutique is coming! Let’s see what the press will make of that.

 

We’ve already got some great names on board – Jean-Pierre Braganza, PPQ, Emma Cook, FelderFelder, the list goes on.

 

Next up…more meetings, discussions about finances, staff and duties as well as sourcing more accessory designers, deciding on window graphics and coming up with a slick window display. All in a day’s work!
