NEWSLETTER Dear all,
As reported in the Metro today career advice for school leavers is in a state of crisis. According to a new report commissioned by an Industry Apprentice Poll fewer than one in ten apprentices found out about their job via a teacher or careers adviser with more than half saying they used their own initiative. Julia Chippendale MD of EAL which established the council commented that the lack of support is a “crying shame”.
For opportunities and apprenticeships in the fashion sector we are here to help, to view the latest positions available click here.
ASOS – A Winner in the Retail Christmas Sales
ASOS has also made it into the newspapers this week as the online retailer topped the festive sales war. The company is one of the biggest success stories in British retail in recent year with sales reaching £335m between September and December. Analysts estimate that ASOS will be the first company to top £1bn by this summer. As a part of their investment and speed to market ASOS have consistently used fast track production in Britain which includes working with our very own Factory in North London and continued support with the Stitching Academy.

From Stitching Academy to M&S
Khadra first became involved in the ASOS Stitching Academy through an advertisement she saw on Fashion Capital. Khadra enrolled onto the course in July 2013. Completing the course 5 days a week for 6 weeks, Khadra was exposed to what happens in production in a real fashion, work environment. Khadra finished the course in August, and keen to get into fashion, kept in touch with Fashion Enter. After being introduced to the Fashion Enter Level 3 apprenticeship programme, it was clear that the production route of fashion was ideal for Khadra, and she began sending her interest over for roles.
Khadra was successful in getting to the interview stage, for Garment Tech apprenticeship with high street giant, Marks & Spencer. After 2 screening days and some tough interviews, we were delighted to hear that Khadra’s hard work had paid off and she was successful in getting an apprenticeship!

“I first heard about The Stitching Academy through the advertisement on the Fashion Capital website. I’m really grateful that I was able to get involved with the programme during the summer. I was able to gain experience in a factory environment which I had not previously been able to do. My time spent at The Stitching Academy has opened so many new doors for me which I’m very thankful for. I’ve now been given the opportunity to start an apprenticeship with Marks & Spencer which will allow me to gain vital in-house experience which I probably would not have been able to get at university. I would like to thank the tutors and everyone at Fashion Capital because without their support I would not be where I am now.”

Youth Fashion Wandsworth Project
Fashion Enter have now set the brief for the Youth Fashion Wandsworth Project.
Young people aged 15-19 should apply now for a chance to be chosen for the scheme. Successful applicants will be taken on a fashion journey, with the chance to develop their skills in the design and creation of garments.
Applicants can submit ideas for garments that will be professionally made up, then styled and modelled for a photo shoot. The event will culminate in a high-profile exhibition at the Pump House Gallery in Battersea Park to show off the students’ work alongside that of top designers. The exhibition will reveal and celebrate the range of creative processes and skills involved in making the final garment that appears on the catwalk.
The project is the brainchild of the mayor of Wandsworth, Angela Graham, who has devoted her mayoral year to creating opportunities for the borough’s young people to succeed. She is working with the council’s arts and youth teams and with Fashion Enter.

Boutique Pick of the Week
This week the legendary ‘Queen of Wrap’ designer Diane von Furstenberg opened her ‘Journey of a Dress’ exhibition at the Wilshire May Company Building in Los Angeles. Celebrating the four-decade-long legacy of her famous piece that “will always make women feel like the best versions of themselves”, the exhibition features 200 mannequins dressed in variations of iconic wrap design.
Channelling the DVF mood but in somewhat colder climes we have picked out this DVF Monique cardigan, a great layering piece made from a blend of wool, silk and cotton. The geometric pattern gives this practical piece some extra style points too.
