This week on FashionCapital the ethics of fashion is put under the spotlight with a statement from PETA requesting that Harvey Nichols return to their fur-free ways now that Paula Reed has resigned as Fashion Director for the high-end department store. Last week another factory fire in Gazipur, Bangladesh claimed the lives of nine workers and injured a further 50, bringing the Bangladeshi manufacturing sector under intense scrutiny from press and the major retailers. ReWorks Apprenticeship
ReWorks is still searching for a Fashion Marketing and Product Development Apprentice…
ReWorKs upcycles surplus textiles to create sustainable product ranges for the global fashion industry. We aim to develop ethical solutions to textile waste solutions and to revive UK manufacturing, with localisation at the heart of our thinking. We are an authority on genuine vintage garments with inspiration from both military and civilian vintage styles. We wholesale garments and accessories to retailers and designers seeking individuality and authenticity. In addition we produce basic collections ready to wear or to customise.
We are looking for candidates interested in pursuing a fashion textile related career pathway and would be keen to gain experience in working within a dynamic environment. You will be working closely with our Network Partners, Sample Machinists, Sales & Marketing & Operations Functions. You will contribute to improving all aspects of product research, design, quality assurance and development of products and services.

The Role:
The right candidate would be involved in the following activities:
- Trends and General (internet) Marketplace and Competitor Research
- Sample Creation, Analysis, Tracking, Archive & Feedback Collation
- Fabric and trimmings sourcing and Quality Control
- Assisting in translating fashion concepts and designs into workable garments
- Preparing items for photography, image re-touching & social media
- Logistics requirements. This is including warehouse tasks, dealing with couriers and arranging shipping documentation
- Data entry responsibilities – making sure systems and schedules are updated
Experience & skills:
Above all, we like enthusiastic and passionate people who have a strong vision for what they could bring to ReWorKs. An ideal candidate will be:
- Highly motivated and extremely organised
- Able to work autonomously when required or within a team
- Well versed in Microsoft office packages
- Determined to complete jobs to best of their ability and willing to go the extra mile when required.
- Driven to succeed with a good eye for detail
- Demonstrating a “problem solving/Can do” behaviour
- Able to deploy good communication skills
- Able to proactively identify and analyse problems and propose commercial solutions
- Be passionate about sustainable fashion garment development.
To become an apprentice you must:
- Have 5 GCSE’s
- Two of these GCSE’s must be Maths and English
- Own a valid UK passport
- Own a valid National Insurance card/proof
- Be aged 16-24
- Live or be based around London (as this is where apprenticeship will be based)

Katy Strange Bags Topman Apprenticeship
Congratulations to Katy Strange (pictured right) on getting the Topman apprenticeship position. The competition for this apprenticeship placement was extremely tough so well done. Here is what Katy had to say:

Aged 16 to 30 and Want to Start Your Own Business?
The Bright Ideas Trust is calling on people aged 16 to 30 from across London to take part in two dynamic half-day events, supported by Accenture and taking place at Fairfield Halls, Croydon, on Wednesday, October, 30, 2013.
Attendees will get the chance to find out what it takes to start up their own business in a packed programme of workshops, practical activities and talks, led by Tim Campbell, the first winner of BBC TV show The Apprentice.
After spending two years with Sir Alan Sugar’s company Amstrad, Tim has made it his mission to inspire other entrepreneurs. He set up the Bright Ideas Trust in 2007, and remains and active trustee of the organisation which has given hundreds of young people a chance to start up in business by providing advice and equity funding.
Tim will be joined at ‘Your Lightbulb Moment’ by Margaret Mountford, one of Sir Alan’s original sidekicks on the hit BBC1 programme. She will form part of an expert investor panel that will be keen to hear your business ideas, irrespective of what stage you are in developing your business.
The event will feature practical workshops and advice sessions on how to start-up and get funding; the chance to meet and network with other young people; plus an exhibition of new businesses that have started with Bright Ideas Trust support.
Lisa Gagliani, chief executive of the Bright Ideas Trust, said: “London is full of young people with great business ideas and the raw talent and determination to become successful entrepreneurs. Many find it hard to take their ideas further because they lack the necessary funding, skills and opportunities.
“We believe more should be done to help these aspiring entrepreneurs to realise their potential and the ‘Your Lightbulb Moment’ event is a great opportunity to demonstrate that the necessary advice and support is available to fulfill their ambitions.”
The first 300 delegates will also receive goody bags containing useful business equipment and services and there will also be the opportunity to win a host of prizes including an iPad, logo design, management consultancy and bespoke business cards.
