Dear all,

Profile in association with London Garments Expo – 29th – 31st August 2012

The three day fashion event is almost upon us with just a week to go now till the opening day! On 29th August the Business Design Centre will open its doors for prospective buyers in search of fresh and creative designer talent as well as fabric and garment manufacturers from around the world.

Philip Walker, Sourcing and Buying Director from New Look will open the event and confirmation has been received that the Director of Design and Head of Design for Contemporary Brands from House of Fraser will also be attending the opening on the 29th.

We have a fantastic selection of designers showcasing across ladieswear and accessories which will combine true British designer talent with manufacturing excellence.

Meet one of the designers – Riona Treacy

Belfast born and McQueen trained fashion designer Riona Treacy will showcase her first luxury retail collection at profile. The collection combines the traditional Japanese hand-dye technique Shibori, with modern textiles including neoprene and rubber coated lycra, translating each piece into a timeless blend of rigid structure and fluid colour. Each garment is a contrast between the fleeting beauty of youth and the brutal reality of inevitable decay.

We have received a fantastic response regarding the embroidery classes set to start at The Fashion Studio in September, so much so we will now also be holding an evening class each Thursday for those who cannot make Saturdays. The classes will begin Thursday 13th September at 6.30 – 9.00pm

Each class will cost £50 plus vat or you can book all seven classes for £300 plus vat. Members to FashionCapital will also receive a 10% discount.

On the course, students will be introduced to the various media available and work with their preferred options across the five weeks of the course. They will learn to work from concept to product using thread, beads, stones, metals, crystals or textiles to create unique embellishments for items of their choice.

Each student will choose a concept/project and with expert guidance, develop it from idea to product. They will receive a personalised handbook created for them incorporating their learning on the media and project of their choice.

We are made to think about planning every aspect of our business.”

Fashion and Textiles Apprenticceship Programme

FashionCapital has secured more placements for Apprentices this week but we are still looking for employers to take an apprentice on!

The Apprenticeship in Fashion and Textiles is a wonderful option for a designer on a budget to expand the workforce and bring a new dynamic addition to their team. Apprentices will be trained for one day of their week at Fashion Enter’s Fashion Studio and spends the remaining four days working with the designer. Collyer Bristow continues to provide general legal guidance for FashionCapital users

We are often asked questions by those who are just setting up in business , or who have set up and have queries they would like answered—often these questions are fairly similar in nature and include the same themes…

Debts and debt collectors

I asked a builder to help me make some stands for my showroom.. we agreed a short  contract by way of e mails and I explained what was required. The cost was about £3,500. In the end , he did the work late and  badly and I had to find someone else to do it properly for me. Even so, he sent me a bill for £3,500, which of course I didn’t pay. Now I have received a letter from a debt collector who seems to have bought the debt which I apparently owed the builder. They are threatening me with bankruptcy if I don’t pay, what shall I do?

Sometimes debt collectors hope, by sending you a letter suggesting they will apply to the Court to make you bankrupt, you will pay up, even though they may not necessarily know all the facts. [Remember bankruptcy only applies to an individual , the equivalent term for a company is insolvency.] If you can genuinely dispute the debt—for example you can show the work was not done properly and you had to pay to find someone to sort it out–you should write to the debt collector in very clear terms, explaining all this and setting out the relevant  facts. Once they see the debt is disputed , they will almost certainly drop it. They are not going to want to get into a long debate and generally will bring claims against debtors they know aren’t likely challenge them. If in doubt get some advice quickly.

HENRY HUNT SHOWCASES LATEST DESIGNS

The Henry Hunt Summer Show, held at Pitcher & Piano, Taunton, this month was a huge success and saw the first, exclusive preview of what’s to come with the new Autumn/Winter collection. Some stunning new additions to the recently launched ‘Heirlooms’ collection sparkled their way down the runway causing cheers of approval from the audience. The delectable range of evening dresses are guaranteed to add glamour to any special occasion from the red carpet to the Christmas party. The night was an enjoyable event with a summer feel, from the flower garlands handed out at the door to the plentiful pitchers of Pimms and the Champagne truffles offered by Hotel Chocolat. The feeling of Olympic fever and Jubilee celebrations was potent, with Union Jacks adorning the walls and catwalk, illustrated finally by the grand entrance of the Britannia dress to close the show.
