Fun and Fair!
18-09-2010

As I settle in with complimentary lychee martinis and stop to chat to actor Jeremy Sheffield, there is enough time to browse some of the fabulous creations from the designers. Some of these outfits are no different from the collections we are used to seeing at fashion events; however there is a remarkable subtext at present here. For it is clear that there is passion and belief that has gone into sourcing fair trade cotton and employing factory workers who are not exploited.
From jewellery and accessories to office wear suits, the ranges are both diverse and innovative that sits with the key trends of today’s market. But it is the charity t-shirt that steals the night. Either in pink or blue the t-shirt is personally designed for its owner in their desired shape. My favourite? It would have to be a tie between the strapless for a casual beach babe look, or with added black feathers to add a burlesque feel.

The awards itself are simple yet upbeat as we all gather around the D.J booth to hear Lisa, our host for the evening announce the winners. There are six winners overall, each one more excited than the last to be recognized in the industry for their artistic talents and grounded values. We are then encouraged to walk around the showroom before ending to carry on enjoying the party.
I circulate for a while joining in on some of the conversations with various girls from charities involving the environment, fair trading and equal working rights. They all seem energetic and zealous by the fact that they can interpret their values through clothes. As volunteer Kate states ‘everyone loves fashion, so it’s a great way to get the message through to our audience.’ If one thing’s for sure, the award for attitude and enthusiasm has to go to these girls.
