Straight stitch
This stitch is the most common stitch used. Small stitches are normally used for fine fabrics while larger stitches are used for thicker fabrics.
Machine tacking
Simply sewn using the longest stitch length. You can also loosen the tension slightly to make the stitches easier to remove.
Zigzag stitch
Most domestic machines have a zigzag feature although some industrial machines don’t. you may need to manually set the stitch width and length. Zigzag stitch can be used o neaten edges although and over locker is advised.
Stretch stitch
This stitch is a very small zigzag stitch. This creates a slightly stretchy stitch. This is suitable for seams on stretch fabrics. Although on a lot of stretch fabrics it is advisable to use an over locker to sew the seams this is more secure.
Machine blanket
This seam looks like a hand sewn blanket stitch and can be used as a decorative effect. This can also be used to form a seam and finish raw edges at the same time.
Satin stitch
This is created using the zigzag stitch set very wide with a short stitch length. Some machines will have an automatic setting for this stitch.
