Employees with Disabilities

01-08-2008

Carshalton College in Surrey offers a three-year Lifeskills programme, which is designed for students with a physical or mental disability.  Their aim is to help as many of their students in finding work.

The first year of the course is college-based and it concentrates on forming relationships and to build the students confidence.  The second year involves a two-week work experience placement at a chosen employer.  The final year comprises of up to three days a week with a designated employer, with the other two days at the college, where they reinforce the skills they learn in the workplace.

For students who do not feel ready to participate in the vocational scheme, they have the choice to work within the college departments, where here they often feel more comfortable.

Pathway, a Mencap job placement service realise that the disability is often not a problem; it is how the disability affects the person’s learning ability.  Skill, is a campaigning charity, which provides information and advice.  They also work on the front lines to conquer unfair discrimination, which is often shown towards people with disabilities.  Many people are still being discriminated against when it comes to employment and the educational provision across the country is not enough.

However, with the help of charities and educational institutions working to exploit antiquated attitudes, there is hope from campaigners that firms will utilise the potential within the disabled community.
