Fashion Takes A Trip

12-01-2005

1 Morocco

Harking back to those hippy-trail days in 1970s Marrakesh was the likes of – Etro, Blumarine, Betty Jackson and queen of the wrap-dress – Diane Von Furstenberg. Tunics, kaftans and wide loose pants offer a relaxed silhouette in washed-down soft fabrics. Other Moroccan influences include – sunset and tobacco shades, decorative embroidery, beaded flat sandals, and embellished collars, cuffs and hemlines.

2 India

East meets West as Saris are given a European twist at Clements Ribeiro. Chanel has a Bollywood moment with a Lagerfeld take on the Lenghas, and its decorative sequins and embroidery galore at Alessandro Dell’Acqua and Temperley. For shades of India check out Pollini by Rifat Ozbek, while newcomer Ashish Gupta offers the real deal with his entire collection hand-printed and embroidered in India.

3 Africa

Moving deeper into the African continent its inspiration a-plenty. From the Safari look, to batiks and tie-dyes, African prints and jewellery are particularly strong this season. Dolce & Gabbana combined wild animal prints with a sexy safari look. Maxmara, Michiko Koshino and Valentino borrowed from African-inspired patterns. While Viktor & Rolf, Versace and Costume National experimented and recreated traditional safari attire.

4 Caribbean

Colours of the Caribbean could be found courtesy of – Jessica Ogden, Prada and Eley Kishimoto. With models strutting to reggae tunes covered in a liberal dose of Rasta stripes the flavour was distinctively Jamaican at Prada. Caribbean crochet, Irie Rasta caps and bold Jamaican colours were just a few of the main themes coming through loud and clear.

5 The Far East

From Obi belts, Japanese calligraphy, Mandarin collars and kimono sleeves – elements of the Far East have not been excluded this season. Leading the way is Alexander McQueen with his structured kimono style jackets, Chinese blooms and intricate headgear. Others tying-in a touch of Asia include – Giorgio Armani, Gianfranco Ferre, Antonio Marras and Kenzo.
