Needful Things

It seems like winter has barely arrived when the spring looks for 2007 have already begun to step into the spotlight. Next season’s trends are elegant and brazen, with many collections sporting sophisticated and sexy blazers. And yes, I know what you’re thinking. Blazers are not sexy. But they are teamed with the stylish and flattering mid-thigh shorts and the sloping wide-brimmed hats that heavyweights such as Armani have been sporting on the catwalks in the world’s most fashionable cities. If you’re like me, then style and co-ordinated outfits play a massive part in your life. But, where would we be without the needful things that compliment those outfits…accessories.

Accessories can change the way you look, feel and dress. Add a splash of colour in the form of a belt and a silk scarf or a sparkling pendant and the most plain top can look hugely striking. And let’s face it, no matter how gorgeous the evening outfit, we all know its accessories that really compliment our clothes.

Spring 2007 brings us a wide range of accessories to choose from. Evening bags, as fronted by Celine and Chanel, are graceful simple styles with fancy metal straps. They are much smaller in size, shrinking to a minimal elegance that says a lot without saying too much.

Daywear bags have grown into a bulky vintage hand-held tote with sturdy straps for handles. They are patterned, detailed and amazingly chic. Louis Vuitton, Dries Van Noten, Prada and Zac Posen have contributed hugely to this. And clutch bags remain a firm favourite.

The dominant colours for this season are mustard, brown and tan with dashes of orange and bronze to add that warm effect for spring. The bags and footwear are on an even footing with chunky being the overriding style. Donna Karan and Dolce and Gabbana have created platforms, wedges and stacked heels designed to be worn by the modern yet slightly retro individual.

In short, next season’s shoes are outrageous and sexy. They are extra high, perfect for your adventurous side (we all get a little bit more daring in the warmer weather!), and are bold and gutsy, reminiscent of that known and loved Seventies fashion. The shoes are lace-up and strappy, giving every woman a chance to show off those shorts-clad legs with daring sophistication. Wear with pride.

Sunglasses are particularly big and come in shades of sooty black and golden brown. The angular frames are designed to shape and sculpt the face, as shown in the Julien Macdonald collection.

Jewellery has taken on a bohemian look with wide bangles and long earrings that go perfectly with the billowing Grecian image that consists of floaty skirts and loose fitting trousers; a big trend for spring.

Whatever your outfit and however your style, those glamorously gorgeous needful things are sure to put the spring in your step this season.
