Retail Outlook

11-08-2008

Constant reminders of the diminishing value of our hard earned money driven by skyrocketing food and fuel prices combined with the inevitable decreasing Autumn temperatures one would expect consumers propensity to purchase to reduce alike however this does not seem to be the case…

Within the previous quarter, over six fashion stores have extended their chain invading the high streets of West London. The likes of leading lingerie retailer, La Senza, fabulous online footwear store Pretty Ballerina and menswear formal shirt retailer, Charles Tyrwhitt have all been reaping the otherwise covert cash benefits and are by no means slowing down.

Not only are a selection of retailers bypassing the depressing effects the current state of the economy in the UK today, an evident trend with online e-tailers taking the lead showing that in fact, the fashion retail sector has not been hit as harshly as we initially thought.

Amongst the midst of countless end of season sales, lending the impression of struggling retailers coping with the economic state of affairs, numerous high street retailers are flying high. New Look are taking their concept overseas, launching a store in Paris whilst H&M and Mango are still winning and staying put with focus on the UK consumer for now via re-fits and re-launches.

So how has this recent potentially optimistic outlook on the retail sector arisen? Can we thank the blood, sweat and T-shirts television series shown on the BBC earlier this year which aimed to raise awareness on the quality of clothing and the conditions workers in factories abroad are forced to endure? Are consumers investing in smaller quantities of higher priced fashion and veering away from the cheap chic shopping culture? Only time and statistics will tell, in the meantime, enjoy spending or cashing in whatever side of the till you may be.
