Re: View

07-10-2008

Refashioned, recycled, upcycled, vintage, eco-conscious, call it what you like, my interest in ethical fashion started by necessity. It was a bad case of needs must. I learned to paint and sew in HMP Holloway where I had landed myself in 2005. In the craft class, resources were limited, mostly donations from the organisers of the Miss World organisation (don't laugh) and swatch books from home interiors shops.  At the time, Ethical Fashion consisted only of organic cotton pieces that were more moo-moo than Miu Miu. Something had to be done.

Moksa means freedom and Surya is the Sun or source of light, in Sanskrit and the first Moksa  Surya  ready to wear collection for Spring Summer 2009  is inspired by the Tree of Life which makes an appearance in every religion. It is the universal symbol of our origins and the link between earth and heaven. In Kabbalah it resembles the ten sephirots or emanations, and it is in Sufism, the esoteric branch of Islam. My own world had been blasted back to ground zero and I had a chance to remake it in the way I wanted. But being in prison gave me a lot of time to think about the life I had had and the one I had always wanted. It was now about taking what I had been given and doing the best with it. There had to be a way to make something of the way I had junked my life.

Fashion is the essence of who we are as women, in our expression of ourselves and while it is easy for a designer to "brand" her customers with a trademark look, it's more challenging and fulfilling to work with and listen to real women and to create something beautiful and wearable, a conscious choice rather than an off the peg or magazine page look. Women today are increasingly involved and concerned in the care of our planet, maybe it's part of the natural inclination to nurture. And ethical and organic clothes have certainly developed to take into account more discerning tastes,. But still, the organic sector lacked the glamour which the Princess / Rock Star latent in all of us craves. My first pieces were one of a kind vintage embellished denim jackets, which were hand painted and blinged up, Messers Swarovski was the source of crystal inspiration!

Moksa Surya is the first limited edition luxury fashion brand which is totally eco-centric from grown to sewn. We use only Fair Trade and organic fabrics and a lot of the embellishments and stitching is done by women's co-operatives. Our organic cotton Freedom Tees are made by refugees in the Palestine and embroidered by inmates in the UK Prison system. As well as organic cotton and denim, which are staples of the eco-warrior's wardrobe we have used organic silk and Peace silk, which is produced from silk cocoons when the moths have emerged. Traditional silk is made by boiling or stifling the silk worm before it can emerge. Beauty does not have to equal pain or waste.  Fluid and elegant tailoring is combined with effortless luxury for the modern women for a look she can carry from day into night.

Fashion can be more than a statement; it can be your personal manifesto to change your world. It's a choice and a statement about who you are and what you represent. Heaven is always a thought away and we create our lives around us with every breath we take. I blog about my meanderings in the world of ethical fashion which you can read here
