Art SPY

17-10-2008

Welcome to this week's Art SPY

'Art SPY' brings you a selection of various Artists and Galleries that we find simply delightful!

Whilst in Dorset I came across some wonderful artists that I had to include in this week’s Art SPY.  I was in the beautiful little town of Westbay near Bridport when I found a lovely studio which was open on the Saturday so I went in.  I have to say that I found this artist's work enthralling, beautiful cloud formations, light depictions all inspired by the sky’s of Dorset.

The artist: Jon Adam

Jon Adam is a contemporary artist who is based in West Dorset.  He is best known for his abstract work on canvas using vibrant colourful images with the use of oil paints which he actually makes himself using traditional methods.

As with many artists who live and work in Dorset it is very apparent that most draw their inspiration from their surroundings.  All of Jon’s work is suggestive of land, sea and sky, yet allow for your imagination to conjure up other images.

'For me, it's all about watching a painting evolve; building up layer after layer of colour and tone.'

The reason I love his work is because the way in which he uses the brush to form beautiful skylines and the way in which you can actually feel the wind in the pictures…

Moving further down along the coast you come to a pretty little sea-side town called Lyme Regis which is buzzing with activity and is a hive for busy artists.

The artist: Christine Allison

The next artist I will review lives in this idyllic town and again draws her inspiration from the sky, sea and natural world of Lyme Bay. This is what I adore about the artists of Dorset they are at one and so in-tune with nature which so effortlessly comes about through their artwork.

I was speaking to a local artist in Lyme Bay who told me that unless an artist has a stimulating environment in which to work they simply cannot function as work becomes forced and ends up coming out not the way you intended it.  It’s vitally important for any artist to have an environment in which they can gather ideas and flourish, otherwise it’s like putting a flower in a dark room – it simple wilts.

Art is clearly everything to Christine, she lives, breathes and eats art by putting back into the community, she holds a 5 day art course for adults and works on community projects too all of which help her to merge relationships with the local people.

Christine works mainly through abstract exploration using bright colours to capture the sea and the sky
