Winter Warmers

04-02-2009

Wow! Whether you've been snowed in, stuck out or just managed to get an unexpected day off…..I hope you've all been looking suitable splendiferous!  For those of you still trying to work out if it is possible to look good in a pair of salopettes, or how to don that bobble hat at just the right jaunty angle to avoid geek and nail chic, here are some of the hottest looks recently witnessed ambling around Brighton on recent 'snow days'!

There really are only two ways to approach cold weather gear – style, or practicality.  Whilst a number of ski-wear manufacturers aim to combine the two, invariably the overall effect is much more 'slope' than 'sales'.  So, for those of us not about to jet off to Saint Tropez, what is out there to allow us to look fabulous without looking positively Arctic?

If, like myself, you have more than just a little streak of vintage running through you, there really is no finer cold weather wear than the faux fur muff.  Deliciously toasty and fabulously fashionable, these items truly do add a touch of glamour.  Teamed with a vintage pillbox hat, this combination can enliven any outfit, from a pair of jeans to a floral print dress, and will keep you snug to boot!

A significantly more high fashion winter look can easily be achieved with a few core items, flexible enough to be worn often, but suitably a la mode at the same time.  By investing in a statement coat, you can achieve a high fashion look time and time again, and this cover-all allows you to make some savings on other 'unseen' items such as jumpers or cardigans.  The general rule with statement items is 'the bolder the better'; bright colours, exotic prints or extravagant ruffles all work in achieving that assertive look whilst ensuring you stay warm.  Alternatively, for those of us with slightly more meagre finances, other accessories can enliven a less exuberant jacket.  Team a plain, block colour coat with a vastly oversized corsage or Liberty-inspired scarf for that glamorous look on a budget.

Bold Eyes

For a quick fix to brighten up a winter outfit, don't forget one of your most important accessories – your face.  A statement eye shadow or a pillar-box red lip can instantly enliven a winter outfit, and with most of us hoarding hundreds of unused make up items, the likelihood is this quick fix won't cost you a penny!
