I Want To Ride My Bicycle…
24-03-2009
A helmet is an absolutely indispensable piece of kit, but talking to the cyclists on Bright seafront this weekend, it seems that the unpicturesque nature of the beasts leave a lot of people reluctant to don one. However, help is at hand courtesy of online retailers such as Nut Case, Cycle Chic and Cyclodelic, who offer pretty, colourful and attractively patterned helmets, ensuring you are sexy as well as safe. Cyclodelic in particular offer a wide range of incredibly funky cycle accessories, including gorgeous colourful studded bicycle clips and a dramatic, elegant and sophisticated cape, especially designed for wearing whilst cycling.
If bicycle clips are taking it a step too far, there are other ways to ensure you don't wreck your outfit, and trends are really on your side this Spring. Denim leggings are huge right now, teamed with a pair of flat boots or cute deck shoes, you can look delicious, with the additional bonus of not getting all entangled! Alternatively, don't be afraid to wear a cute little summer frock, as long as you're not too partial to minis! 50S style frocks are set to be a big seller this Spring/Summer, and with their tendency towards knee lengths, you can ride in comfort, knowing you aren't putting on a show for passers by! Caution is advisable if you are planning to wear heels whilst cycling. Although not necessarily posing a risk to your safety, you could be risking your shoes. The pressure caused by pedalling can weaken heels, potentially resulting in deformed or even broken heels – you have been warned!
How about the machine itself? Looking splendid will pale into insignificance if your bicycle isn't as fabulous as you are! If you are feeling flush and really want to make an impression, a Beach Cruiser is the perfect accessory. However, for those of us with more meagre budgets, there are ways of 'pimping your ride' that won't break the bank. One idea is to add brightly coloured panniers or a bike box, both of which personalise your bicycle whilst providing secure storage. I particularly like this kitsch floral pannier set, and this super-vintage tartan bike box. Even having a wee pet is no excuse not to get out there and get active. A puppy most likely wouldn't be able to run alongside your bike Bodyform advert style, but this practical and stylish pink pet cruiser basket ensures you can both travel in style (available from www.funstufffordogs.com).
