GFW 09 – University of Salford
09-06-2009
I overheard one tutor explaining that a lot of the students go into University with the intention of doing womenswear but naturally gravitate towards mens. Although he also lamented the fact that womenswear designers still outnumber menswear but from the look of the Salford show, they are on equal footing in terms of talent.
Holly Murphy's collection, entitled "Roll Up! Roll up!" impressed me and made me giggle, a definite favourite. Her pantomime inspired collection saw her sending her lovely models down the catwalk in oversized blazers and bizarre shirts and a particularly massive rucksack.

Blazers were very much the order of the day. Lucy Beard's were by far the most beautiful blazers on the catwalk today. The clever use of luxury fabrics and metallic colourings contrasted to the oversized, rolled sleeve, boyfriend style and made really stunning pieces. My favourite was the gold one which started the show but also worth a mention was the hugely oversized black metallic one which was a real statement item. She contracted these hard lined blazers with very feminine, detailed and floaty dresses which picked up on the metallic theme, with a hint of sparkle a glamorous addition to a neutral palette.

Gemma Clement's collection inspired by Liberty print history and Stepford wives explored how identity can be lost, entitled "Still Life" it totally blew me away. Like Sally Ellis also from Salfords and Sophia Bentley Tonge from Nottingham Trent earlier in the day once again the facial covering has won me over maybe I'm just a sucker for a gimp mask. However this collection was fab from gimp mask to toe. The delicate floral ditzy print featured in two tones on each piece and highlighted the creativity of the tailoring. The quirky approach to colour and print did not detract from the classic-with-a-twist cuts and shapes. The high points of this collection for me were the sleeveless trench coat/ dress and the super high waisted blue pleated skirt.

That's all for Monday from me, I'm off to get myself a gimp mask!
