Today Vanessa Camelia Trend Predictor for FashionCapital.co.uk attended the industries best known Trend Predicting presentations held by Trend Union held at 66 Portland Place at the Royal Institute of British Architects.

66 Portland Place

I thoroughly enjoy attending these presentations that are held twice yearly in London.  It’s always so impeccably put together.  As ever, I am amazed at the work of Li Edelkoort and her team.  Li is the most famous trend predictor in the whole world and is well respected all over the globe, recognised through the work of her trend books – Bloom, View on Colour and of course the presentations.

The presentations are an accumulation of the most beautiful images, striking, extremely visually stimulating and thought provoking. These images take root in your imagination and do leave a deep impression.  The presentations are always accompanied by the most bizarre music which adds to the eccentricity and slight madness that is Li Edelkoort, that said with the utmost respect.

BloomThis time, we were all given a copy of Selvedge Magazine as well as a folio.  There was a buzz and people from all walks of the fashion industry stand around chatting with each other over drinks and nibbles. The display of Bloom and View on Colour magazines stretched the entire length of the wall, then at 2pm sharp the Lecture theatre doors swing open for people to take their seats and for the unveiling of yet another long awaiting presentation.

These presentations are always extremely emotionally empowering.  As soon as Li walks onto the platform she is greeted kindly by a huge welcome of clapping hands. Li spoke about how the trends for AW 2010/11 have come to be.

We have seen since 1990 to 2010 that people have lived in fear from the Millennial bug that was supposed to reek havoc to the twin towers bombing in 2001 and then the serious emergence of terrorism, the Middle East War, food View on Colourscares, people are much more wary and unsure of people and religions to the current economic downturn and lack of trust in our MP’s people are fed-up with living in fear and are waiting to step into a new way of life.

Quote from Selvedge Magazine May/June 2009 issue p.39

Li Edelkoort is, unsurprisingly, an early adopter of a trend that is going to be big for A/W 2010.  It seems after the current period of fear and financial misery ends we will be embracing ‘dialogue’, the idea that ‘the earth in one’ and witnessing ‘ a moment of consensus’ – in fashion terms that means cloaks…

The title of this presentation was called Monologue

Quote from the Trend Union Folio – p.3

Li EdelkoortIn a quantum leap of faith, society will turn around for the better, formulating new ideas and brokering new deals, nursing new talent; seriously sorting things out and giving vital form to a MONOLITHIC society.  After a long period of fear and violence and financial scandals, the world will engage in a movement towards dialogue, developing diplomatic skills, understanding that the earth is one and that the democratic systems and ideals rely on a economic entente amongst markets and nations.

We will be offered a longer period of social and artistic welfare where the individual is able to embrace and engage the multiple and where the unique will espouse the universal; where a cultural consensus will edit our lives like a beautiful book; a powerful MONOLOGUE of opportunity, of eroticism and serenity, of the exciting relationship between artifice and authenticity.

There were 13 trends that came through at the presentation:

MonoCULTURE – MonoGRAPHY – MonoTONES – MonoCOLOURED – MonoBASICS – MonoCRACY – MonoBODY – MonoSPACE – MonoPOLY- MonoTRACES – MonoSTYLE – MonoLITHIC.

Four of these trends will be interpreted into trends for Members of FashionCaital.co.uk.  They are truly wonderful and are a must for any fashion designer.  FC Trend Prediction will work in-house to produce the Moodboards, Collections Boards, Working Drawings and descriptions.

The first set will be available to our members in the next few weeks.
