How To Dress Your Figure
28-08-2009
Tall
To make yourself look less like your towering over everyone avoid wearing vertical stripes and the same colour top-to-toe as this will create the illusion that your even taller. A pair of low-waisted bootcut trousers will be a flattering shape for your height without making your long legs look disproportionate to your torso, but for those that want to show off your never-ending pins skinny jean or ankle length leggings/jeggings are great ways to go.

Short
To elongate that small frame of yours make sure to avoid ¾ length trousers as they will just shorten your legs even more, so stick to full length narrow or straight leg trousers, high waisted skirts and trousers will also work to lengthen your legs. Wearing the same colour top-to-toe is a great way to give the illusion of height, and of course a good pair of heels will add on a few inches too. But make sure you don't wear anything that will make you look wider like chunky knit or ribbed tops because they will shorten you as well.

Broad Shoulders
For those of you with more of a sporty frame go for garments on your bottom half that flare out, such as bootleg trousers and fish-tail skirts, to balance out your wide shoulders. For your top half make sure to avoid halter-necks as they will draw the eye to the shoulder area, instead try a wrap-around top because these can be very flattering on women with a broad upper half.

Narrow Shoulders
To disguise the narrowness of your shoulders try wearing a trouser suit with a long jacket, and you could even try a top with shoulder pads that are set to be big trend this Autumn/Winter. Failing that a halter-neck or a slash neck top can give your shoulders a broader appearance.

Big Boobs
For starters you need to ensure that your bra fits you properly so you're getting the right amount of lift to keep your waist looking defined. Steer clear of high neck lines as they will make it look as though your boobs start from right under your chin, go for low, sweetheart necklines or V-necks because they will work to break up the large expanse of your chest. Opt for tops that are fitted under the bust to ensure you waistline is defined, and always buy tops that fit around your boobs to avoid the fabric ‘pulling' across your chest area. For your bottom half you need to work on balancing out your figure so as not to look overly top heavy, bootleg trousers and A-line skirts will do this for you but straight leg trousers should be avoided at all costs.

Small Boobs
High-necked tops are great for accentuating your boobs, as well as delicate, strappy or sleeveless tops in a lighter colour than your lower half will help give the illusion of a bigger chest. Or you could just cheat with a padded bras and chicken fillets to give yourself more of a cleavage.

Undefined Waist
If you've got a straight up-and-down figure fear not, there are a few ways to give yourself the appearance of womanly curves. Stay away from shapeless tops and dress and stick to a fitted shape instead with simple necklines that taper in beneath the bust. Hipster trousers are also very good at giving the illusion on a more defined waistline.

Flat Stomach
For those lucky women out there with pancake-flat stomachs you can get away with pretty much any style of trouser or shirt that's available so check out the advice for the rest of your body for any hints and tips that will help you out.
Round Stomach
Flat-fronted trousers and skirts are great for a larger tummy, avoiding pleats and front zips. Trousers with a low waistline will also make your stomach look smaller. Tops made from soft, forgiving fabrics that will skim over your tummy not cling to it, particularly in a wrap-around silhouette that will detract from any rippling in that area. Steer clear of belted jackets, tops and coats because the belt will just ride up over your stomach and make you look like you're pregnant.

Wide Hips
To conceal those child-bearing hips go for an A-line skirt or dress with a frilled hem to balance out your hips and thighs. Always avoid narrow legged and tapered trousers as these will just make your hips look wider, and trousers with details like side pockets will do the same. To help you even out your top half with your hips go for a slash neckline to widen the shoulders, or a V-neck to draw the eye upwards and away from the problem area. My last bit of advice would be to avoid belting your waist at all cost as this will just create and even bigger contrast between the size of your waist and the size of your hips.

Narrow Hips
Most of your will probably be happy with your petite hips and thighs, but if you want to achieve a curvier, more voluptuous figure try wearing a figure-hugging pencil skirt, and trousers with side pockets will also give you a wider appearance. Bias cut dresses and skirts will emphasise your hip area, and a belted jacket that flares out will also accentuate your petite frame.

Big Bum
Light colours on the lower half of your body are an absolute no-no, so are narrow-legged trousers and pleats. Instead go for a wide-bottomed trouser, with no details like pockets or pinstripes, teamed with a long jacket that falls below the bottom for a slimming effect.

Small Bum
For the lucky few that have a small, pert behind then the best advice I can give is to flaunt it in a fitted pencil skirt that hugs your bum. However for those of you with a practically non-existent bottom that want to give the appearance of a few extra pounds the go for more of an A-line shaped skirt, and stick to wearing lighter colours on your bottom half. Also, ensure to avoid straight-legged trousers as they will only work to accentuate your lack of a bum.
