Hannah Marshall

She has been accredited with ‘reinventing the little black dress.’ Her focus has been on creating constructed yet feminine pieces. Her work has an edgy and young feel about it her designs are simple yet unqiue with just a touch of masculinity about them. Celebrities such as Florence Welch from Florence and the machine and Eleanor Tomlinson are fans of her work. Hannah Marshall says that “Architecture is always in the background of what I do,” and she also says her ideal customers would be “Alison Mosshart, Erin O’Connor or Carine Roitfeld.”
Marshall grew up in Brightlingsea, and also around Colchester; she graduated from Colchester School of Art and Design with a degree in fashion in 2003. By 2005 she was working for Jonathan Saunders as an intern and, by 2007, had set up her own label, although she continues to work at two other jobs to finance her label – she lectures foundation students at Colchester School of Art and Design and also works in a boutique in Colchester.
Her autumn/winter collection, army of me, for 2010 is a mix of black outfits in striking silhouettes with a variety of materials including velvet, leather and faux fur. There’s a show stopping outfit which includes a box coat, latex top and cut leggings and a fabulous power cut dress teamed with a band belt. Her collection dynamically reflects modern woman as powerful urban warriors.
I love her work because it’s youthful, edgy and has a rock’n’roll twist.
