Iris Van Herpen

09-08-2010

The 26 year old designer form the Netherlands collection was influenced by her fascination towards the secrets and invisibility of water.  She wanted her collection to show the transformation of water to crystal.

She said. ‘I am fascinated by the fact that there are secret lines in totally transparent and liquid material. Life appears at the moment of freezing, when crystals form. Only then becomes the underlying symmetry and structure visible.’

This was evident as many pieces in her collection featured intersecting and undulating lines, giving the impression that it was bending and flexing, the process of water turning to crystal. Heavy detailing was especially evident; highlighting how fascinated to do with science the designer was and also how much detail the designer had paid to attention.

What I loved about her collection was that it was clear. It was weirdly simple, easy to understand and you would not think so given the complex inspiration. Many of her pieces were ready to wear as well, although I suggest it should be evening wear. An outfit that stood out for me was the garment that seemed to be actually coming out of the models back. Similar to a sedimentary process – rocks that have been repeatedly beaten by water.

You can catch Iris Van Herpen at London Fashion Week This September.
