Buckingham Prep School visits The Factory

09-02-2016
The trip was part of their DT project with the aim of extending their knowledge about British manufacturing.
Following the trip their tutor commented:
“Jenny has been working in the fashion industry for over twenty-five years. It was wonderful to be introduced into the idea of ethical manufacturing by someone with her experience. The issues around textile and fashion industry have touched on some very important PSHE topics. Textile products are made all over the world under increasingly competitive and unethical conditions therefore seeing how an ethical factory should look like was fundamental to boys’ learning process.
“The tour of the factory fascinated both teachers and pupils. All the employees were eager to show the boys what they do. The boys enjoyed seeing how patterns are cut. They spent quite a lot of time in front of Chris’ computer and gave him a hand with his ‘pattern puzzle’. They later saw Barbara in action and discovered that there are still things people do that machines cannot. Jenny taught them about the importance of teamwork and how Beth, the mastermind behind some of the designs, has to work with other people to put her ideas into action.
“The Factory is a place where people come not only to work but also to learn. It aims to attract more individuals who want to learn skills. Marilyn has kindly shown the boys some of her students’ work. She is for sure a great tutor because the boys thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with her in the workshop. So much that they almost forgot it was time to have their packed lunch and to return to school. Luckily, Miss Raduca had her eyes on the watch and made sure they were back just in time for a short Science lesson.”
The students were a complete pleasure to welcome to the Factory. Their questions were probing and intelligent for such young men! A credit to the school and we would be delighted to welcome a further cohort of students to the Factory at any time.
