Labour Behind the Label – Leicester Open Letter

The recent BBC Panorama programme on 6th November shone an ugly spotlight once again on the ongoing exploitation of workers and the lack of oversight in fashion company supply chains in the UK. The investigation highlights the continued unfair and abusive purchasing practices which squeeze suppliers on prices and lead times. In turn this impacts worker who are underpaid, harassed and forced into insecure jobs.

The past decade has seen numerous reports detailing similar practices in Leicester garment factories, and other factories both in the UK and internationally. The situation was also investigated during the 2019 Environmental Audit Committee investigation into Fast Fashion and concerns were raised in Parliament in December 2020.

As a result Labour Behind the Label is circulating an Open Letter requesting that Government take 5 essential and urgent steps. Fashion-Enter CEO Jenny Holloway has signed this letter and there is an ongoing campaign from Labour Behind the Label: ‘Garment Workers in Leicester Deserve Good Jobs’ tap here to sign the petition.

MakeUK Roundtable and The Green Jobs Plan

On 7th November, FEL CEO Jenny Holloway, attended a MakeUK roundtable meeting to discuss The Green Jobs Pan for the manufacturing sector.

Jenny said: The Green Jobs Plan is an excellent initiative and we need to ensure that Green Jobs are created and sustained. For our industry we need new ways forward. At the roundtable I explained how we have a new programme with United Repair Centre and Patagonia.

“I also discussed how we have the only centre in Europe with sustainable on-site fashion practices with Style3D, Kornit and Zund – yet where is the commitment by industry? Why aren’t retailers using the technology and why doesn’t Government create a system whereby TOMs are recognised?

“It was great to meet and talk with the rest of the manufacturers too; the discussions regarding a lack of skills within the sector have been well documented for many years and it is a problem that continues today, especially with higher level skills.

“Thank-you to MakeUK for inviting FEL to this informative discussion.”
