Time to Bring Production Closer to Home
25-01-2025
CEO of FashionCapital / Fashion Enter Ltd, Jenny Holloway, comments on the latest financial crisis hitting Turkey and how production on home soil makes economic and environmental sense…
“So many textiles are imported to the UK from Turkey and the political and economic instability there has made the headlines for a number of years. The Lira fell 20% on Friday (10th August 2018) to record lows after Trump raised tensions with tariffs on the country’s steel exports.
A new all time low for Turkey occurred in Asian trading too. The euro was down 1% and then there is the foreign debt – $350bn held by Turkish banks and companies. With weak currency and inflation soaring at an average of 11% trade with Turkey has to be monitored closely.
The UK garment manufacturing industry has never been so buoyant or so appealing and ethically right with a lower carbon footprint. Is it time for retailers to start vertically integrating backwards? Time to work as one! Yes, without doubt!
There are some excellent highly skilled garment manufacturers out there and they need to be utilised throughout the UK, it’s time to bring production closer to home.”
