The Fashion Fix – New York – 2 To Watch

26-04-2019

The bi-annual spectacle of Fashion Week descends on the four major capitals of the world this month, and with this comes much anticipation as to the fresh upcoming designers that will be debuting their new collections. We all love to see the top design influencers bring out the big guns and we also thrive on witnessing emerging talent who set the standards for the future.

We’ve found two designers who are kicking off the commercial capital of New York, who showcase aesthetics from avant-garde surrealism to new purveyor of prairie sophistication. These will be the names to look out for this season…

Vaquera

Patric DiCaprio, Bryn Taubensee and Claire Sullivan are the brainchildren behind contemporary innovative collective Vaquera, a label who are frequently known as “fashion fan fiction”. They extract aesthetics inspired from a dichotomy of influences from Martin Margiela’s deconstruction to the Suffragette uniform worn by Vera Wentworth.

Emerging as a subcultural highlight during NYFW, Vaquera showcase their lo-fi, high-concept image. Vocalising their design intent, which conjures unusually brilliant narratives, they explain how, “We believe luxury can be conceptually rich clothing, and not just made with expensive materials. We’re interested in telling stories through our clothes – and we want our customers to feel like they can be a part of that.”

Batsheva

Prarie chic at its coolest, Batsheva Hay is steadily becoming very popular throughout the It scene. From Sarah Jessica Parker and Celine Dion to Susie Lau and Lynette Nylander; celebrities and fashion icons alike have been known to outfit themselves in the label’s LDS-imbued femininity.

Outré indulgence reflects Hay’s aesthetic, with cascading tiers and floor-sweeping frills being acknowledged as the brand’s signatures (imagine Molly Goddard meets Anna Sui). A continuing pop-up will be exhibited during this season’s NYFW, where made to order dresses and custom-made garments will be created by seamstresses, followed by the reveal of her brand’s new collection.

Check in next week for more trends, news and views xoxo, Katie.
