The Fashion Fix – Haute Couture SS19
Couture Fashion Week: the bi-annual highlight on the fashion calendar that is perfectly positioned to propose a fantastical breather from our somewhat uncertain reality – oh, and my favourite report to compose!
Forever seen as the greatest escape, the couture shows are an unapologetic jamboree of fashion’s most elaborate techniques, of luxuriant embellishments and magnificent gowns. A reliable and indulgent showcase of fantasy, finery and all that is frankly fabulous, the SS19 collections offered an exquisite story of everything that could be oh so wonderful in the world…
The modern day atelier who personifies couture in all its splendour; Giambattista Valli has cemented his status as the most anticipated and astonishing young designer by continuously constructing breath-taking gowns that marry fairytale dreams with contemporary creativity.
For SS19, Valli took inspiration from the aspiration of his early beginnings and combined it with his signature overwhelming silhouettes, over soaked shades and last season’s OTT enormous cotton candy conceptions. From petite numbers that skimmed the body in an abundance of sparkles and large bows to avant-garde frothy, cascading, candyfloss masterpieces that characterise couture and magical modern infusions in between, Giambattista Valli sold the dream.
Staged by the Italian Riviera and lake district and framed by slender cypress trees and luxuriant palms, the Chanel 2019 couture show saw an immaculate approach to dressing via dainty, frail and subtle styles that portrayed a real sense of purity.
Signature trim tailoring of the particularly exquisite kind boasted the majority of the collection with delicate fitted suiting, tailored dresses that were rigid albeit fragile – many of which were bejewelled in microscopic floral embellishment, so fine it resembled glass. Iconic tweed, a flutter of feathers, impeccable fits and elegant puffball skirts through to quietly dramatic tiered skirts, sophisticated and voluminous ballgowns, bodycon numbers rendered in stunning embellishments. Alongside Victorian-esque lace layered attires and a bejewelled swimsuit with cap and cascading veil to coordinate – the collection was delightful.
No couture report would be complete without featuring Valentino. For SS19 Pierpaolo Piccioli intermingled the haute couture codes of the fashion house with modern-day principles. Citing the Renaissance and Romanticist masterpieces that enlighten his haute couture handiworks, the designer considered the way in which beauty was depicted over the years and implemented black women at his forefront, therefore exploring the stereotypes of haute couture.
The collection included everything from 1980s lace floral hosiery and the pièces de résistance: the gowns – to floral-on-floral summer dressing. Magical volumes, romantic ruffles, dramatic fabrications, regal gowns and flamboyant finishes embodied the captivating collection.
