Talking Apprenticeships with JD Sports Design Apprentice Christy Mylott

22-04-2025

National Apprenticeship Week 5th – 11th February 2024 promotes and celebrates apprenticeships across a broad range of industry sectors. Flying the flag for JD Sports and Fashion-Enter Ltd, Islington Council recently interviewed Design Apprentice, Christy Mylott, for their website and print publication, read on for Christy’s mini apprenticeship interview…

Q Which apprenticeship are you doing and why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

Christy: I am currently doing a Fashion Studio Assistant apprenticeship in Product Development. The reason why I chose to do an apprenticeship is because I think its more beneficial learning on the job rather than the ‘traditional route’. You gain real life experience and get to see first-hand how the business operates, gaining valuable skills along the way.

Q What does an average day look like for you as an apprentice?

Christy: In a typical week, I spend 5 days a week in the office learning on the job alongside doing my apprenticeship with Fashion-Enter Limited. I also block out 8 hours per week for my OTJ (on the job) Training, which is allotted time to complete things like assignments and tasks set by my provider.

Q What advice would you give to other young people thinking about doing an apprenticeship

Christy: I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone who prefers in-person learning. You gain fantastic communication skills and gain a greater understanding of the business you will eventually work for as well as your role and what’s expected of you before your permanent position. In my opinion, apprenticeships are the best way to educate young people who want a practical learning experience while also making a living.

Each year the Department for Education announce an annual theme for National Apprenticeship Week and for 2024 the theme is ‘Skills For Life’. Want to find out more about apprenticeship opportunities then visit the National Apprenticeship Week website.
