Repair & Upcycle with the FC Designer Workspace
03-05-2022
Following the success of the Upcycling Workshop in October 2021 in conjunction with Islington’s ‘Greener Future’ Festival, the FC Designer Workspace team organised another upcycling drop-in event.
Held on 29th April 2022, the repair and upcycling workshop brought new and reoccurring visitors to the workspace, each with different and varying garments to work on with the assistance of tutors, Ana, Nick and resident, Angus.
After signing-in at the front desk, each person was given a 1 to 1 session on their arrival, instructing them on what they needed to do to start the upcycling/alteration process. One attendee had brought in a simple white shirt which they requested to be collarless. Here’s the before and after.
During the workshop, tutors were on hand to answer any questions the learners had and to help and advise as and when they needed.
Another attendee, Abbie, came in with a vintage dress that they wished to be taken in under the arms. They had been instructed to unpick the seams and took the time to listen tentatively to tutor, Ana, to fully understand the next steps, and was then able to execute the alteration perfectly. This was Abbie’s first-time altering clothing and gaining valuable skills that can be used on other garments at home.
Due to the success of the workshop we are considering a monthly session to support the local community by providing an accessible space for them to learn sewing skills for free. These drop-in sessions will also provide the opportunity to show local residents the facilities and courses that we provide at the Workspace, some of which are free for those that are unemployed or on a low income.
