Paris Haute Couture AW18/19

From July 1st through the 5th, the world of fashion experienced a fantastical escapism via Autumn/Winter 2018/19 Haute Couture Week in Paris, where 34 of the greatest industry influencers presented their otherworldly collections that never fail to leave everybody completely spellbound.

Elegance transpired to be the overriding theme for the season, a quality that will forever be welcomed with open arms amid our cultural uncertainties. Notable aesthetics included ladylike dressing via glamorous flourishes and birdlike embellishments – for instance, sparkles, pleats, tulles, feathers, fluffy accents and fez hats – imbuing all that is utterly feminine and fabulous.

Froth For Daytime

Italian couture extraordinaire Giambattista Valli’s signature froth-filled creations made a flamboyant and fabulous return to the catwalk, depicted in lavish layers of rainbow-hued tulles that were more superb and sizable than the last. The designer’s motto of: ‘go big, or go home’ was quite literal, with other couture houses including Alexis Mabille and Ulyana Sergeenko illustrating voluminous creations that were equally as ethereal.

Shocking Pink

If you were in any doubt as to the season’s most covetable hue, we can confidently confirm it was magenta, and lashings of it. A grandiose puff sleeve gown, complete with an animal-inspired butterfly mask emerged as a real show-stopping piece from Schiaparelli and was rendered in the most intoxicating shocking pink. Elsewhere, old-school glamour was radiated at Armani, with heavenly sweeping dresses outfitted in a fluttering of pink feathers – symbolizing haute couture in all its glory.

The Glitz and Glamour

An obligatory trend that screams couture like no other: glistening sequins stole the style spotlight amid the collections. Glistening detail of the slightly subdued variety was showcased at the likes of Chanel and Ralph & Russo but elsewhere seemed to be a different story. An avalanche of sparkle showered the catwalks from those at Valentino and Azzaro as well as Zuhair Murad and Elie Saab, illustrating a galaxy-esque aura, so stunning that eyes began to glaze over in amazement. Perhaps the most sparkly of them all was Givenchy, with the latest offering from Clare Waight Keller featuring muted metallic and statement silver sequin arrays.

Speaking of couture, a reminder that the latest fashion exhibition extravaganza to hit the V&A is arriving next February in the form of Christian Dior, entitled ‘Designer of Dreams’ – an absolute must! Also, see our exciting apprenticeships that are still currently on offer at Ralph & Russo!
