19-08-2022
New research reveals that the feel-good factor that accompany’s buying a new item of clothing soon fades after just four wears. The poll compiled by UK charity Oxfam and psychologist, Dr Carolyn Mair, stated that 47% enjoy buying new clothing items, but the post-shopping fix rapidly turns to guilt for 56% of shoppers.
The research studies the psychology behind our shopping habits ahead of Oxfam’s Second Hand September campaign – to encourage shoppers to opt for second hand items throughout the entire month.
Other findings revealed that UK shoppers purchase new clothing items on average five times a month, typically spending around £70 a month, and that 46% enjoy a bargain with charity shops gaining in popularity as a result.
The overriding message is that on the whole UK consumers enjoy shopping and the thrill of a new purchase, however, environmental concerns, and now soaring inflation has seen a rise in charity shop activity.
The recent pairing of the popular reality TV show ‘Love Island’ with eBay as an official pre-loved fashion partner revealed that the future of buying second hand is bright, in the space of 3-months, before the collaboration began to mid-point of the TV show, live listings increased by a massive 1026%.
Jacquai Holcombe manages the Bath branch of the Shaw Trust charity shop she said: “We offer affordable fashion on a shoestring that’s accessible to everyone. Since re-opening after lockdown footfall has gone up, many big brand names have disappeared from the high street but charity shops like ours, are thriving.”
Editor of FashionCapital JoJo Iles adds: “I regularly visit my local charity shops to see what they have in and I have noticed how busy they have become in recent months. We have tonnes of clothing already in circulation and it makes sense to reuse what we can. Once a month we hold a Repair and Upcycling workshop at the FC Designer Workspace in Islington and these session are buzzing with individuals wanting to tweak or personalise pieces from their own wardrobes along with their second hand finds.”
