Fabric Appreciation #2 – Highly Recommended!

27-04-2017

fabric course 2Sourcing fabric and understanding their properties is a vital part of the design process and an element many designers have very little knowledge of. The implication fabric can have on manufacturing, costs and lead time is imperative to the success or failure of a collection.

“Aesthetics, feel, country of origin, production, wearability and aftercare are crucial to consider before purchasing fabrics for your collection.”

“Key factors that influence costs of fabrics are fibre qualities and spinning systems that are used, which mainly impact raw materials.”

Offering her expertise, Deborah advised that when looking for a fabric mill, you must ask yourself what is the country of origin and what implications could this have?  How can you ensure that bulk production costs the same as the samples?  How can you ensure continuity throughout?  Deborah also highlighted that customers may not often realise it, but the quality of the fabric impacts the cost of the garment as well as the wearability and aftercare.

After another successful seminar, comments included:

“Highly recommended! I came away with a detailed analysis about fabric.” Chinedu

“Excellent educator, thank-you.” Vera

“This was a more detailed session following the FashionCapital Trunk Show in Manchester. I found the information extremely useful. Very well presented, thank-you.” Cotilda

“I learnt about the areas I need to think about for fabric for production, colour and different types of fabric. I enjoyed the session, very informative.” Makhumula

Deborah will next present at the FashionCapital Trunk show on 22nd June in Plymouth!
