Sew We Learn – Free Level 1 Accredited Course

What you will study:20 april sew you learn

Over 10 weeks you will study how to use an industrial sewing machine and also learn employability skills to help you kick start that career in fashion you have always dreamed of.

You will study 8 units with a total of 18 credits. Upon successful completion you will be awarded the ABC Level 1 Award in Work Skills and the ABC Level 1 Award in Fashion and Textiles (Sewing and Textiles).

Level 1 Award in Fashion & Textiles (Sewing & Textiles)

Using Industrial Sewing Machinery, 4 credits
In this unit you will develop their skills in the use of industrial sewing machinery. This includes how to identify the main parts of an overlocker and flatbed straight stitch machines, demonstrate how to thread them correctly, insert the bobbin, adjust the tension and produce a range of sewing tests.

Industrial Sewing Operations, 4 credits
In this unit you will develop skills in the use of industrial sewing machinery. This includes how to use a lockstitch machine to produce a range of seam and hem samples, join fabric with an overlocker and adjust stitch tension appropriately to achieve a suitable finish.

Inspection of Finished Sewn Products, 4 credits
In this unit you will learn about the inspection process involved when inspecting finished sewn products. You will then be required to demonstrate that you can inspect finished products.

This includes recognising what happens after a passed and failed inspection and identifying the relevant tools, machinery and documents needed during the inspection process.

Level 1 Award in Work Skills

The Units:

Applying for a Job, 1 credit
You will be shown how to research job opportunities and complete a job application correctly. This course also includes an effective CV and cover letter.

Interview Skills, 1 credit
You will be shown how to prepare for and take part in an interview; this will include preparation, planning and effect verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

Self-management skills, 2 credits
You will understand the importance of self-management for employees and also develop time-management skills for work.

Positive Attitudes and Behaviours at Work, 1 credit
You will demonstrate positive behaviour in line with organisational policy, consider the effects of positive behaviour and attitudes in the workplace, and review your own behaviour and attitude.

Preparing for Work Placement, 1 credit
You will learn about how to prepare for a work placement by learning about a company or organisation providing the work placement, with regard to the responsibilities, as well as the appropriate behaviours and sources of support.

How you will be taught:

You will be classroom based in Wandsworth and Haringey and enjoy a variety of interactive sessions which will cover employability issues, using industrial sewing machinery and health and safety issues. You will also work in a live environment in a thriving factory in North London Haringey that makes ladies clothes for M and S, asos and many other brands.

What can I do once I have completed the course?
Upon successfully completing the course you have lots of opportunities to follow such as an apprenticeship, employment into fashion houses or even start running your own designer label. We can also offer more in-depth courses in areas such as pattern making. There is “sew” much to learn!

Days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday Times: 10:30am – 4:30pm
