This is a creative course balanced by a practical education in design, clothing manufacture and professional presentation. Personal development is promoted by combining aesthetic and practical skills with cultural and market awareness. The course covers womenswear, menswear, childrenswear, pattern cutting, tailoring, illustration, styling, design and visual research and presentation.

    For the first two years, all your work will be in the form of projects designed to test your skills and to expand your experience. Some projects are studio based and concerned with the use of the machines, basic techniques, materials, colour and texture. Others are concerned with research, investigation, observation, drawing, illustration and computer-aided design.

    The fashion course has had successful graduates whose talents and skills lie within the huge ashion employment market. They include:

    • Richard Gray – internationally known illustrator and art director
    • Richard Sloan – who graduated only two years ago and is already successfully styling and art directing such as style icons such as Kylie Minogue and Coldplay and stylist for the designer Robert Cary-Williams

    Modules:

    Year one Semester one: Introductory Fashion/Basic Skills, Transferable Skills, one relevant History of Art and Architecture module. Semester two: Intermediate Fashion/Garment and Accessory Design/Manufacture, and one relevant Art and Design module.

    Year two Semester one: Understanding Fashion, one relevant History of Art and Architecture module. Semester two: Developing Fashion, Placement in Industry.

    This course is ideally suited if you’re aiming for a career in the fashion sector but not as a maker. You have a similar first year to students on the BA Honours Fashion, giving you a foundation in technical skills (pattern cutting and clothing manufacture) as well as elective workshops in skills such as photography, illustration, Photoshop, print and print-making, knit, embellishment of fabrics, reprographics and journalism. In years two and three, you will develop an in-depth awareness and understanding of fashion-related skills including fashion illustration, portfolio collections production, photography and styling and fashion journalism. You will have the opportunity for a six-week placement in the second semester of the second year.

    Its distinctive focus is, essentially, what happens to clothes after they have been made, and we aim to produce graduates who will forge successful and lucrative careers in fashion-related spheres of the burgeoning creative industries sector – styling, art direction (for shows or magazine editorial), trend prediction, including branding, illustration, portfolio presentation and photography.

    You are based in the fashion studio and will work closely with staff from Visual Communication Design, which includes photography, graphic design and illustration and book workshops.

    We cover essential fashion design skills because although you are not required to make clothes as part of this degree, an understanding of how clothing is constructed is relevant. These include:

    The degree is further enriched by History of Art and Architecture modules that run through all three years of the course, providing a contextual framework that relates fashion design, styling and promotion to historical, philosophical, cultural and socioeconomic contexts.

    Year One:The first semester of the first year is common to the BA Honours Fashion Design, Styling and Promotion and the BA Honours Fashion. We will support any student who may wish to change pathway through their optional module choice.

    Year Two: The developing of the use of graphic skills and magazine design including photography; interactive i.e. TV and web, design; also advertising, copywriting, promotion and publicity and their application to fashion.

    Year Three: The defining of: a personal design identity and the design and design development employed in the refining and production of a final portfolio.
