In Closet

21-02-2014

One of the most iconic moments in fashion’s best-loved TV-turned-movie-franchise, Sex and the City, was when Big showed Carrie her gleaming new walk-in, all done out in brilliant white with a space for every single dress, shoe and couture hat. A walk-in closet isn’t just somewhere to keep your clothes; it’s a stylised space in which dreams can be made reality.

Of course, a traditional walk-in closet isn’t always a possibility, especially not in today’s increasingly rental-oriented society. So not only have we collected together some tips for designing the perfect walk-in, but we’ve also included some tips on how to create a walk-in space for those of you who don’t have the means – or the Big – to install a proper closet of your own.

Interior Design is Everything
No walk-in is an island, therefore you should never treat your walk-in as an entirely separate entity to the rest of your home. This is especially true if your walk-in is right off your bedroom, as most tend to be. A plain, drab walk-in will invariably end up looking more like a cupboard than the fashion sanctuary it’s supposed to be. A long mirror is essential, as is good lighting, and it’s also a great idea to create a flow by incorporating some of the design aesthetic you used in your bedroom. For example, if you have a particular preference for Homemaker Bedding’s floral duvet sets, consider incorporating floral elements into your closet in the form of a lampshade, rug, or even a feature wall.

Organise Your Clutter!
Any fashion maven worth her salt will know that behind every messy look lies hours of careful consideration. In fashion – especially couture – everything must be deliberately chosen to ensure maximum effect. Try to incorporate this attitude into your closet. Carefully arranged chaos is one thing, but clutter is an absolute no-no!

Create an Ambience
Part of the appeal of the walk-in closet is its dreamlike quality. You may not have the resources to achieve a Carrie-esque Elysium of gleaming perfection, but there are certain things you can do to make your walk-in a happier place for both you and your clothes. For example, making cute little potpourri pouches to adorn your clothes rails will keep your garments smelling gorgeous no matter how long they’re left to hang. Not only that, but you’ll get a gorgeous whiff every time you open the door.

Making the Best Use of Space
Not every girl is lucky enough to have her own walk-in, but it’s perfectly possible to make your walk- in dream a reality providing you’re willing to make the best use of your space. For example, a walk- in ‘space’ can be easily created using a couple of clothes rails and a room divider, and this space can then be decorated and arranged in much the same way as a traditional walk-in might. If you’re creative, your very own Carrie closet is only an idea away.
