What’s Trending This Week?
On Tuesday, Gigi Hadid revealed on Instagram (what else?) that she has been immortalised as a Barbie doll – which is dressed in her Tommy X Gigi collaboration – and, most surprising, the plastic doll actually resembles her very well. The supermodel captioned the image: “Can’t believe that’s me !!!!!!! Thank you for this honor #Mattel @tommyhilfiger can’t wait to have #BARBIE join us at the #TOMMYxGIGI show tomorrow! @barbiestyle @tommyxgigi”
On Wednesday evening, Tommy Hilfiger and Gigi Hadid kick-started NYFW with their brightly coloured carnival themed see-now buy-now show/extravaganza/concert/fairground, which saw pretty much every model walk in it (and Gaga was even in the frow!).
Rosie Huntington-Whitely is pregnant, which the supermodel/business women confirmed via her Instagram on Thursday. Choosing to share a picture with her growing bump on the beach (taken by fiancé, actor Jason Statham) with her seven million followers, it followed the news that George and Amal Clooney are also expecting.
This week the internet (and its many faceless trolls) decided to make hateful comments about Lady Gaga’s incredible performance during the Super Bowl half-time show, and more specifically, her body. Many criticised the star – wearing a custom Versace Atelier bodysuit – for being “chubby”, having a “beer gut” and “muffin top”, and advising her to go to the gym. “I heard my body is a topic of conversation so I wanted to say, I’m proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too. No matter who you are or what you do,” she wrote on her Instagram. “I could give you a million reasons why you don’t need to cater to anyone or anything to succeed. Be you, and be relentlessly you. That’s the stuff of champions. Thank you so much everyone for supporting me. I love you guys. XOXO, Gaga.” A good message indeed.
More Super Bowl action: New England Patriots player Tom Brady (and husband of super-supermodel Gisele) kissed her following his amazing victory at the Super Bowl. Playing the match of his life, commentators made (very valid) claims about Brady as the match concluded, such as “No quarterback has been as remarkably consistent and dominant for two decades while players swirl in and out of the league around him.” He broke a multitude of records on Sunday, including the most passes completed in a single Super Bowl (43), the most passes attempted in a single Super Bowl (62), and the most passing yards in a single Super Bowl (466). Bündchen was seen all over social media dancing energetically and jumping excitedly following her husband’s immense success.
Maria Carey released a new music video on Saturday, titled I Don’t, which depicts the singer/songwriter/MAC collaborator burning the $250,000 Valentino dress that she had planned to wear at her wedding to James Packer. It certainly acts a dramatic spectacle, but perhaps auctioning it off to a charity may have been a more considered approach.
There was of course the usual dollop of discrimination, sexism, violence and general political unrest that has now become a permanent feature of our world. Luckily, NYFW has commenced and LFW commences this week, and will hopefully ignite a brand new wave of inspiration and ingenuity to be marvelled at by the world. I cannot wait.
