What’s Trending This Week? (x3)

Been sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to hear about Dior’s new Creative Director? Well, get comfortable, because the brand has confirmed that the in-house design team will be taking control of the forthcoming couture and A/W 2016-2017 collections, without a high-profile designer at the helm. This means they will have plenty of time to choose the right successor to Simons, as Pieter Mulier (Simon’s right-hand man and obvious choice) is said to have “quietly exited the company in recent weeks”. #DiorDrama

Gigi’s little sister: Bella Hadid (though I suppose she despises being called that) made an appearance in The Weeknd’s new song: In The Night, who she is – coincidently – currently in a relationship with. #boyfriendbenefits

Monday 14th was the eve of Star Wars: The Force Awakens world premiere in Los Angeles, attracting paparazzi in their thousands. Fashionistas got in on the Wookie action too, Victoria Beckham being immortalised in cartoon as Darth Vadar, and Cara Delevingne donning a Jabba the Hutt costume to the premiere in London.

Another Monday (7th) was the day of the Lincoln Center gala, where Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli (Valentino’s creative director) were honoured by none other than Keira Knightly. Unfortunately, Ms Knightly had a few issues with pronounciation, saying: “It gives me great joy to be here tonight to honour Maria Grazia and Chiuri and Pierpaolo… Oh, I don’t know how to say your surname, it’s so difficult.” But it seems there were no hard feelings as Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli were seen taking a selfie with Diane Kruger and Keira Knightley afterwards.

On Sunday 6th Kimye announced the arrival of their son via her website, who we now know (to many people’s amusement, and dismay) is called Saint West. Though after North West, what were they expecting?

Jonathon        Saunders        has        resigned. WHAT??? On Tuesday the much-loved British designer resigned as creative director of his eponymous label, blaming “personal reasons” for the decision (which he came to with his investor and business partner Eiesha Bharti Pasricha (just your average Joe then!)). “It is not a decision that I take lightly and I am eternally grateful to my team for all their hard work and dedication. I am very thankful for all of the friends that I have across the industry, and I look forward to working with everyone again soon on future creative projects,” Saunders said.

Trafalgar Square looked undoubtedly beautiful throughout the festive period, as on Sunday 6th the Menora was lit to celebrate the beginning of Chanukah, the Jewish festival of lights. Did you make a visit into London to see the lights?

Love Gigi Hadid as much as I do? Well, I’m afraid that’s not humanely possible, but, anyway, she has designed a capsule collection for Tommy Hilfiger which is set to include sportswear, footwear, accessories (including watches and sunglasses), as well as a new fragrance! “I never thought I would be asked to design a capsule collection, so it still feels like a dream that Tommy approached me to collaborate,” enthused Hadid. “His company is one that I genuinely love and have been a fan of for my entire life, and Tommy is the easiest, most fun person to work with.” Set to hit shops in the autumn of 2016, the collection will “celebrate Hadid’s unique take on modern style, fused with Hilfiger’s signature ‘classic American cool’ heritage”, according to the brand, which is undoubtedly hoping to capitalise on Hadid’s global social-media reach to help the pieces fly off the shelves. Let’s hope it doesn’t get as crazy as #HMBalmaination was, although I’m sure Tommy Hilfiger is…

Christmas-money must-buy: new tome to the brand’s past, Dior: New Looks. Comprising over a century’s worth of the most memorable images from the French fashion house, the coffee-table book shows why its work has left such an indelible mark on the fashion landscape since its inception in 1946.

Loved Hunter’s cascade of confetti at LFW (even though it ruined your hair)? Well, I’m afraid you won’t be seeing those classic wellington boots on the catwalk anytime soon as the company announced on Tuesday 8th its plans to “step away from the traditional fashion calendar” by focusing instead on speaking direct to customers in Hunter’s main stomping ground: festivals. Other transformations included the company opening standalone flagship stores in ‘key markets’ – such as Tokyo, New York and Hong Kong. Let’s hope all this transformation pays off!

On Tuesday 15th Britain’s first ESA astronaut started his mission to the International Space Station (with help of a team, of course). This is a man who hasn’t been able to keep out of the headlines – whether he’s worrying about floods to filming UFOs – the media can’t seem to get enough of this patriotic hero!

On Monday 7th the winner of H&M’s 2016 Design Award was chosen by a host of esteemed fashion names, such as Olivier Rousteing, Kate Bosworth and Nick Knight. The lucky winner was Royal Academy of Art graduate Hannah Jenkins; “She was one of my favourites so it wasn’t difficult for me. It wasn’t difficult for anyone, we all agreed and all loved her,” said Rousteing to Vogue. “Hannah knew how to make her collection really strong and deep, but at the same time the cuts were great. It was really defined – rough but at the same time sophisticated. It was almost poetic.” Yay for Hannah!

It has been confirmed that Rihanna will show her new collection for Puma (called Puma by Rihanna) during New York Fashion Week A/W16 on February 12th.  The news was announced when Rihanna tweeted a link to auction page for FROW tickets (which started at $15,000) as well as several other exclusive, and undoubtedly signed, prizes. As well as being Creative Director at Puma – the singer has helped substantially increase profits for the sportswear label – she also founded the Clara Lionel Foundation (which is where all that ticket money is going) in memory of her grandparents to support artistic/cultural education worldwide. It seems she’s been a lot busier than I first imagined!

Did you know that…….? Alexander McQueen is relocating from Paris to London for its A/W16 show, which is slated to show in catwalk format (so no McQueen theatrics then, or will there be?) at 7pm on Sunday, February 21. Returning to the birthplace of the brand’s founder, Mr Lee McQueen, it will be a very poignant occasion indeed for the house to celebrate its 23rd anniversary.

Enjoyed Christmas? Cara has been (or at least we think, there’s people laughing anyway). She shared a classic family gathering photograph on her Instagram with the caption, “Happy (crazy) Christmas”. I can most definitely sympathise with that.

The United Nations Climate Conference on Climate Change in Paris drew in thousands of world mayors for multiple sessions of compromise and negotiation throughout December. It was unarguably clear what Paris thought when they displayed the message “No Plan B” on the Eiffel Tower. What’s your outlook? I know mine. We need to do something. And fast.

Chanel Cruise is going to Cuba come May, Louis Vuitton is showing its pre S/S 17 show in Rio De Janeiro later the same month – attending fashion shows at the moment appears to be one big, amazing holiday. Are you lucky enough to be going to one of them? (I wish I was…)

On Thursday 17th it was announced that River Island is launching RI Plus, which will offer a selection of core and main fashion styles in sizes 18 to 24. Set to debut in early March 2016, the collection will comprise of everything from party and workwear to core basics and denim (and will available in top stores and, of course, online). RI marketing director spoke to Vogue and said “Ultimately, it’s about fashion and being inclusive.”

It’s the end of the year (almost), so let’s look at some stats!

The most Googled fashion designers are:

1. Raf Simons (unsurprisingly after his shock departure)

2. Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss (who?)

3. Giambattista Valli

4. Thakoon Panichgul

5. Tadashi Shoji

6. Elie Saab

7. Karl Lagerfeld (THE man)

8. Christian Lacroix

9. Zuhair Murad (fairy-tale dresses)

10. Tommy Hilfiger (the Gigi Hadid influence?)

Most Googled fashion-related questions (they’re quite funny really!):

1. How to walk in heels? (A question we’ve all asked ourselves at some point)

2. What to wear on the first day of school? (The age old question)

3. How to fray jeans? (Oh dear…)

4. How to tie a shirt?

5. What should a bride wear to the rehearsal dinner?

6. What to wear booties with?

7. What are mules?

8. What to wear to a wedding in the woods?

9. How to dress up like Miranda Sings? (The power of YouTube)

10. What colour shoes goes with a black and blue dress?

If anything was awkward this festive period, it was when Ariadna Gutierrez, Miss Colombia, had the Miss Universe crown removed from her head on live television last week, after it was announced that the results had initially been read incorrectly and she had come second to Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, from the Philippines, instead of winning the title.

The new IT bags to own this year are of designers Melissa Losada Bofill and Marcela Velez, with their brand M2Malletier. Their creations have been held by the likes of Emma Stone, and are super simplistic and pretty. #seewantneed

On Sunday 20th Zayn Malik shared a photograph on Instagram of himself with Gigi Hadid, a few weeks after rumours emerged that the pair were dating, and consequently placing poor Gigi back in the firing line of the Directioner’s hate and envy.

Every taken an insanely crowded group picture of you & your friends (or your squad, if you prefer) and then hated having to tag everyone later? Luckily for you, Steven Eichner – a former photographer for WWD – has launched Nameface.com, an industry tool (oh sorry, you can’t use it after all) which promises to identify celebrities using facial-recognition software. “It really helps them with the most vexing problem they face, which is staying up all night adding the names of the people they’ve photographed,” Eichner said. But it’s not only anonymous ‘stars’ that cause photographer’s insomnia, even the most famous faces can be confusing: like Dakota Johnson and Gillian Anderson, Gemma Ward and Sasha Pivovarova or even Sara Sampaio and Adriana Lima. You’d think they know the difference….

Happy New Year! (Just don’t make any silly resolutions…)
