So you want to be a fashion designer – Langley Park Boys & Girls School
11-10-2006
The concept is not to just design a fashion garment but to review how a thought is translated into a garment and the subsequent marketing that is required to make that garment a commercial success. This includes, logo, swing ticket, hangers, packaging, press and PR, illustrations and much more.
24 pupils are involved in the two day seminar that completes tomorrow and the first day included guest speakers Jenni Sutton (illustrator), Hayleigh Amos (Textiles – following on from her degree), Ruthi Orlin (Designer) and tomorrow we have guest speakers Beth Lunn from Huge PR and Mel Everrit on patterns and grades.
Six groups were formulated Edit, Emphasis, Rogue, ICI, Belle and Sense Something and the design process commenced with the ripping of inspirational images from magazines, the snipping of fabric swatches and the tearing of tissue paper et al.

The groups were put under pressure. Each group had four participants and each particpant naturally had their own ideas and concepts. The four man team had to compile their thought processes together and decide upon a collective theme and look for their group. There was much decision and debating but eventually the team produced a definite plan for their label…just as in “real life” design studios! Then each group had to present to the class their mood boards and discuss their themes, concepts and inspiration. Not easy at the age of 15-17 to stand infront of your peers and make a presentation but each lived up to the challenge.

Tomorrow is competition day. Each of the 24 participants will be presesnting their individual piece of work to the rest of the class and then – let the voting begin!
Will it be a winning entry from Edit, the ulta femine but sophisticated label or possibly the layered textured desings from ICI. Sense Somthing had a unisex collection that certainly could be showcased in Harrods, and then there’s Emphasis with the strong Rock theme complete with slashed jeans. Belle had a clear strategy with it’s antique inspired pink lace and femine form whilst Rogue was a fusion of colour blended with style. Wouldn’t want to be a judge tomorrow!
