Make Me a Supermodel – Ch5

14-03-2005

Reality TV shows – just when you thought the format had well and truly run its course – up pops another. This time attention is turned to the catwalk and the world of fashion modelling – with the brand new Channel 5 series – ‘Make Me a Supermodel.’ (Note the use of the word – supermodel – a term that fails to disappear long after Linda, Cindy, Naomi and Co inspired the tag over a decade ago.)

Starting tonight (Monday 14th March 05) thirteen potential female models, already whittled down from thousands of aspirants, will battle it out to win a top modelling contract. Airing over the next three weeks the contestants will be sent on an array of shoots and assignments under the guidance of mentors – Tandy Anderson, Select Model Management Director and photographer – Perou. Of course, this being an interactive reality TV experience viewers’ will have the final say as to who nabs the top prize.

{mosimage}Model and actress Rachel Hunter will be fronting the show, which will no doubt get high on drama as the girls not only have to compete against each other but live together as well. Ranging in age from 17 to 26, the girls will face daily challenges, those who impress the panel most will go on to the next stage, while one unfortunate will be eliminated at the end of each programme. Harsh.

Here’s what each contestant had to say on the subject of becoming a fashion model:

1 Abigail Boston “To be a model you need the passion to be the best and to do your best.”

2 Alice Sinclair “To be a model means to meet new people, learn new things, travel and have fun.”

3 Jasmine Lennard “To be a model is to be a clothes peg with attitude, charm and charisma.”

4 Katie Black “To be a model you have to be quite thick-skinned. Taking comments to heart is not allowed”

5 Samantha Rowley “To be a model is to be expressive, creative, imaginative, sexy, confident and have a brain.”

6 Emily Mann “To be a model allows a unique participation in the creative process.”

7 Kate Ellery “To be a model would be doing something I’ve always wanted to do”

8 Juliet Horne “To be a model would allow me to work in an industry that inspires people.”

9 Jackie Turner “To be a model means living life to the full…”

10 Camilla Hamilton “To be a model means a chance to travel because there is a whole world outside London that I have yet to experience”

11 & 12 The Twins – Antoinette “To be a model means to have class, be a lady and fulfil a dream.”

Patsy “To be a model means fulfilling a lifetime dream. It means setting a trend and not just following fashion.”

13 Joanna Downes “To be a model means having the chance to meet some great people and experience something all girls dream of.”

The end of the journey will result in a full-time modelling contract with top London agency – Select Model Management. Set up in the early 80s Select has guided the careers of – Sienna Miller, Lily Donaldson, Lisa Ratliffe, Portia Freeman and Nell Robinson. Regular clients include the likes of Burberry, Chanel, Matthew Williamson, Jill Sander, Mario Testino, Pop, Tank Magazine, British and Italian Vogue among others.

Selects top model scout and booker Sarah Leon describes what she looks for in a new face: “We look for two types of uniqueness in our models. Firstly, they have to be unique in a classical, beautiful way, or they have a uniqueness which is very quirky and offbeat.”
