Vanessa Scott - Thomason

Before I started working in photography, I was a commercial model. Although these days I’ve gone into semi retirement and I don’t model much anymore.  My real love is to be behind the camera and organizing my own shoots.  I got my start in photography doing behind the scenes shots on a photo shoot for a designer’s collection, and it’s just taken off very quickly from there. I’m now at the point where I’m starting to approach magazines to see about having my own work published.

The name of the game with photography is to evoke something in your audience. With basic catalogue work, you want the audience to see the clothing and identify how it could fit into their existing lifestyle.  When you do advertisements, you go one step further by not just differentiating your product from the competition, but to create an emotional attachment to your company and products, because that creates a loyal base of consumers.  When you think about it, it’s a very powerful and effective marketing tool.

Going that one step further with advertisements is called ‘branding’.  Its not just about the product, it’s about what the product offers the audience.  There are benefits to be sought.  With cosmetics companies, they’re not just selling beauty products; they’re selling the hope of making yourself more beautiful.  If you want to think of how it applies to fashion, we’ve got a couple of contemporary examples.  Ellen von Unwerth brands Miss Sixty as funky but deliciously femininely sexy.  Terry Richardson and his approach to Sisley shows that not only is the clothing super sexy and super cool, but there’s a whole lot sexy fun going on. "Look at all the funky, kinky fun we're having... you are so TOTALLY missing out on..."

Fashion editorials get published in one magazine.  Ads for products get published in almost all magazines simultaneously.   That really is where I ultimately want to take my own photography.  Not just to take the clothing and accessories and get it published in fashion editorials in magazines, but to go that one step further and work to create a product brand.
