I report on the international shows and while NY has a BMI rule I do find some of the models used are extremely tall and thin. Generally the scene is improving for models - particularly in the UK. Models have always been slender on the catwalks and I actually think this obsession with celebrity is the problem. Why is the likes of Victoria Beckham splashed across magazine covers every week? Girl bands that find themselves in the limelight are suddenly given make-overs and loose loads of weight. This is the sort of thing that is having an influence on young teenagers today.

New York Fashion Week took the first step in tackling this obsession by introducing a minimum BMI rule, excluding any models below.
Congrats to the only City who have taken notice of the increasing deaths in the industry due to anorexia and bulimia but still, what about everywhere else?

No, not all FASHION LOVERS have eating disorders but you can see a clear trend featured on the catwalk...
Emaciated skeleton like figures strutting down the catwalk on the verge of snapping in half in their towering heels. Fair enough some girls are born skinny but seriously, these models look ill.
Even male models are starting to disappear - what happened to men and women with a bit of definition on them instead of just skin and bones.
We might as well have floating hangers displaying the clothes as nowadays women are continuing to disappear as a result of this bodytype being glorified by the media and in particular in the fashion industry.
It's not fair for normal girls to try and "achieve" this unnatainable shape, as of course the media does affect us all and some people are more easily influenced than others
Sad but true..

Mentorn, a BAFTA winning television production company, has been asked by a major terrestrial channel to develop a documentary series about eating disorders.
The aim is to bring previously unexplored perspectives of anorexia and bulimia to a wide audience in order to raise issues and prompt discussion. We would like to go on a journey with someone suffering with an eating disorder to sensitively explore the illness, the affects and the treatments.
We want to explore the new pressure on men to be size zero, with male models a far cry from the beefy men who walked down catwalks in the eighties and nineties and are therefore looking for any men who are currently dealing with an eating disorder and would like to become involved in this production.
Please call Clare Lynch on 020 7258 6734 or email clynch@mentorn.tv if you have any questions or would like to contribute. Thanks.
