Dear Jennifer, thank you for your response.
Yes, I do feel that an established home market is important. Although, with the financial situation in Europe, there seems to be more opportunity in the Asian market, specifically in Japan which historically has shown more demand for my _style_ of clothes. (I have worked for 20 years with a well known English fashion house.)
In allowing this retailer to put their label in my designs allows me to test the market with small financial risk, whilst owning the IP . This company is also connecting me with a financial backer in the states.(A celebrity who wants to build her own brand.) I don`t mind their label being in my designs: as long I get paid properly!
ps. although my email address is bccorsets I am not just a corsetiere!
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Bell,
If your collection is designerwear, which I assume it is, an agent will want anywhere between 10 - 20% in commission. A rate of about 15% is typical, especially if the designer is new. Be careful as to how much area you offer your agent geographically. Initially try to develop a home market, exporting can be costly for new designers.
Regarding your deal with your retailer, beware deals like this as they are heavily favoured toward the particular retailer. What this store in question is trying to get you to do is develop there own label collection. In other words, your the designer and already have a collection which they want to buy into but with their own label in it! This is own label business and something you should steer away from if you are trying to establish your own brand. Yes they will finance your cloth & production but when the garments are delivered the store will have a beautiful collection with there label in it so what is the benefit for you as the designer? They probably want to pay you a commission on pieces sold? Again its not benficial for you as a designer. Regarding them carrying your collection as agents, I have seen this done and failed many times. Retailers are retailers. Agents are agents.Keep the two seperate. If the store in question is confident about your collection and wish to stock it then it should be done so carrying your label. This is the only way you can develop a brand and a name for yourself. If the retailer wants to create own label merchandise then they should employ a designer and have them do the graft. It takes you guys a longtime to develop a collection, your collections should not be exploited to this extent. Stay away from this deal & concentrate on having your designs stocked under your own label.
