January 2010. By now, you may have noticed that I love hosiery. I can't get enough of tights! I think it's for the same reason that I love dresses, minimal effort, no matching, and no colour co-ordinating. It's all there for you. This semester has been pretty miserable weather wise so far. From snow to rain to freezing temperatures it's all starting to get a bit depressing. The excitement of new knitwear has long worn off and long day in the library in hoodies and beanies has left me desperate for a bit of excitement in my wardrobe. There's still no sign of a daffodil, not a snow drop or a crocus in sight, (we haven't even seen the sun for a few months up here in Leeds) but spring has sprung on the legs of Leeds students. All over campus groovy tights are brightening up my day and now exams are firmly behind us (thank God) I have been out finding the best of the bunch. These black and white beauties have Chanel written all over them and I love them! I have recently rooted out a pair in the Topshop sale for the bargainous price of £3, perfect for my (lack of) budget! The white can be a little unforgiving so unless you're super confident about your legs you might want to avoid them. If your legs are not your best asset but you still love a bit of decoration then go for a pair of block colour tights with a high dernier. The darker the colour the more flattering, Topshop win again here with beautiful berry tones in stores (and sales) at the moment for less than a tenner. My favourite, favourites are these Henry Holland for Pretty Polly pair. I pre-ordered them in September and they've stayed top of my fave accessories list ever since. I just can't get enough of them. The only thing is, I'm absolutely terrified of laddering them. I'm hardly what you would describe as delicate and although I've not fallen down the stairs in them yet, I hold my breath every time I go to the loo in case a thumb or a finger nail goes straight through and ends my love affair. Definitely not a good idea to wear after a few Special Brews...although it may seem like it at the time! Now is the time to inject a bit of interest into your wardrobe, there are still tones of tights knocking around in the sales and the new season looks promising too. It's such a cheap way to jazz up an outfit, you should never spend more than a tenner on tights (especially if your ladder prone like me!) So get out there and be brave, embrace colour and pattern, although it may not feel like it on these grey, rainy days, Spring is just around the corner and I intend to be ready! By Holly Lowe |
