Copenhagen Fashion Week - Kopenhagen Fur
Copenhagen Fashion Week kicked off in ultimate style with Kopenhagen Fur!

Kopenhagen Fur is one of the largest fur auction houses and principle sponsors of Fashion Week. This season it hand picked ten Danish designers to interpret and create innovative ideas around the luxurious material and fur design. The designers were given free rein to their imagination and were able to use the Kopenhagen Fur’s Creative Centre, Kopenhagen Studio, which regularly invites designers in to exchange ideas in collaboration with the centre’s professional expertise. We have since visited the centre for a unique insight into the production and how the in-house furriers develop new ideas and techniques for using fur. Watch this space for the full report!

The Kopenhagen Fur catwalk show took place in the grand building of City Hall in Copenhagen. A fantastic atmosphere and insanely glamorous audience of fur wearing fashionistas; Soren Bach was the first designer up. His focus was on hats..dyed mink with floral motifs to be precise. Inspired by Russian Isarina hats the collection was bold and daring. An untraditional Milliner Bach’s creations crosses the line between art and design, in 2009 he was selected to participate in the Exhibition Hates; An Anthology by Stephen Hones and the V&A.

In a stark contrast the next designer Elise Gug had a much more classic approach with timeless styles and simple silhouettes, including a long fitted dress coat made from blue iris mink panels and a long, collarless jacket made from nappa treated mahogany mink. Elegant, aesthetic and beautiful designs combined with impeccable tailoring.

Another designer that stood out for me was Islaet, founded by head designer Trine Jespersen in 2008; this was one of the newest labels on the catwalk. Trines inspiration came from the love of her two favourite cities, London and Copenhagen, thus combining the clean, simple Scandinavian vibe with the multi-faceted and colourful imagery of London. Brocade trimmings, gold lining and elegant hats made from dyed black mink gave a military yet regal feel.

The highlight came from Benedikte Utzon, a designer hailing from a family of furriers, architects and designers. Her ultra feminine, glamorous pieces consisted of a floor length mink coat corseted with a snake skin corsage and a dramatic head piece.

Kopenhagen Fur was a fantastic start to the week and a great introduction to 10 of Denmark’s most talented designers, ranging from highly established to up and coming.
