FashionCapital took prime position at the Sanlam SA Fashion Week this season!

Taking place at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg South African designers made sure SA was firmly on the fashion map! Runway shows included the 2009 Mercedes Benz Art Award winners, Black Coffee, delightful ladieswear designer Abigail Betz and the South African celebration of the 50th birthday of the world's most iconic doll, Barbie!

South African fashion designers Danica Lepen and Jacques van der Watt are the design duo behind Black Coffee.

Working with crafters from Mpumalanga - a venture that was done in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture, Black Coffee's collection incorporated intricate crocheting, vibrant beading and classic shades defining the team's innovative apparel.

Abigail Betz launched her brand in Cape Town in 1997 and was soon after stocked in Young Designer Emporium stores nationally. She has a diverse client base in South Arica, Europe and the East.

Abigails A/W 10 collection is a love story - a celebration of life and love and the one you are with. Well constructed and flawless are the words that came to mind while watching the show. Betz' dreamy yet bold velvet half bubble coats, with bow belts, scarf neck and granny brooches in warm hues like brown, cerese, red, cream and black worn over soft pleated, cocoon shaped dresses.

Caren and Gina Waldman established TWO in 2003 producing underwear from their home. They opened their Johannesburg, Doornfontein studio which they still share with their CMT partners, in 2005.

"We are serially enthralled by our involvement with the crafters that we work with in the Northern Cape through the SSAFW/ DAC Fashion Fusion project. We are equally inspired by sacred geometry - grids and patterns that exist in all things... and the infinite universe. The prevailing economic climate inspired our current collection. There is a deliberate application of pairing down, thrift and clear, clean lines. Essential basics are layered over each other and overworked with 'powerful imagery ranging from abstract ideas such as awe and silence to snow and winter'."
