| Back To School |
On Thursday the 26th February, I, Jemima Daisy went back to school. Back in the day, when Jemima Daisy was Jemima Compton, I was always jumping in and out of trouble, never quite obeying the rules and always a little too creative for the school environment. Last week I went back as a visitor to speak to a vocational year 11 class. This year is important for the girls as they are about to sit their GCSE's and make important decisions about their future. There were around 20 girls in the art group, many of whom were interested in fashion in one way or another. I was welcomed into this classroom, where I had learnt so much with open arms. The atmosphere was charming as, shaking a little, I explained myself and Fashion Capital to my audience. ![]() Many students were using photography in their GCSE art portfolio and many wanted to use textiles and fashion as inspiration. Luckily I could answer most questions that the girls and teachers put to me! The subject base ranged from Modelling to Manufacturing and the girls listened attentively as I talked them through some of the many jobs in fashion. I also talked to them about how their current education can help them into a career in fashion and how your personality needs to be suited to a job. Motivation was a key point - you don't get anywhere in fashion sitting on your behind! ![]() Ms Joanne Chipol - Head of Creative Arts commented: "The talk was totally inspirational for our students; an opportunity for students to see the wide variety of jobs available in the creative fashion industry. Our students learnt a huge amount from Jemima who was an excellent example and role model for them. This talk gave them an opportunity to see how their education to date will come in useful in their future careers, using creativity, key skills and the English language in action, as well as seeing how being a go-getting, pro-active and confident person will help them to succeed in a competitive field." I look forward to working with the Weald of Kent more often and we are considering a larger seminar covering more age groups. We are always open to work experience applicants and these girls seemed perfect for the job! For more information on work experience please email me : jemima@fashioncapital.co.uk |
